INTRODUCTION Remedia s science series about the HUMAN BODY includes three individual books: REM 653 THE HUMAN BODY Cells, Tissues & Organs Skeletal System Muscular System REM 654 THE HUMAN BODY Nervous System The Senses Respiratory System REM 655 THE HUMAN BODY Circulatory System Digestive System Excretory System Reproductive System is a wonderful resource book for building science knowledge as well as developing reading abilities and thinking skills. This lesson unit has been written for students with a grade 5-12 interest level and a grade 3-4 reading level. Students will learn about three systems of the body: the Nervous System, the Respiratory System, and the Senses. Numerous science vocabulary words are introduced from brain and medulla to sweat and windpipe. Diagrams of each body system add to the learning process. Comprehension exercises reinforce an understanding of the functioning parts of the human body. A Preview activity and a Review exercise are included for each body system. A glossary of terms provides an informative reference. An answer key is included. As students gain a better understanding of the human body, they enhance their reading and comprehension skills. The nervous system is very important to the body. It is the job of the nervous system to send and receive messages. In fact, it sends and receives millions of messages every day. It receives all the messages that the eyes see, the nose smells, the tongue tastes, the ears hear, and the skin feels. It sends messages telling the body to move. The three main parts of the nervous system are the brain, nerve cells, and spinal cord. THE BRAIN The human brain weighs about three pounds. It is protected by the skull or bones of the head. The brain is made of three parts. The largest part has many folds or wrinkles and is called the cerebrum. The cerebrum controls talking, remembering, thinking, and moving. The middle part, the cerebellum, helps you to keep your balance and keeps your muscles working together. The lower The Nervous System medulla cerebrum cerebellum part of the brain, the medulla, keeps the heart beating and controls breathing. Learning and thinking take place in the brain. The brain stores up memories of the past. 1. What is the job of the nervous system? 2. Name the three main parts of the nervous system. 3. The brain is made of three parts. Name them. 4. What does your brain help you do? THE HUMAN BODY NERVOUS / SENSORY / RESPIRATORY 2 Remedia Publications

NERVES The nerve cells are part of the nervous system. There are billions of tiny nerve cells in every part of the body. The job of nerve cells is to carry messages from all over the body to and from the and brain. Nerve cells which carry messages of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching to the or brain are called sensory nerves. Nerve cells which take the messages from the brain to move the body parts are called motor nerves. Motor nerves tell the body when and how to move. The Nervous System nerves brain SPINAL CORD The is a long, thick bundle of nerves which runs up the middle of the back to the brain. The carries the messages to the brain and then back to all parts of the body. 1. What is the job of the nerve cells? 2. Sensory nerves carry messages of,,,, and to the brain. 3.
