#GIVING TUESDAY MARKETING TOOLKIT Get ready for Nov. 28th!

Giving TUESDAY Champion Survivors of Sexual Exploitation

What is Giving Tuesday? We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, November 28, 2017, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. It s a simple idea. Give to a cause you care about, like ending sexual exploitation, and then tell everyone you can about how you are giving and why they should too. The results are a community coming together to make a difference. How You Will Make a Difference The beautiful thing about Giving Tuesday is that anyone and everyone can participate. There are so many ways to contribute besides making a monetary gift. You ve already taken the first step by singing up for our campaign team. Give. Share. Whether it s giving 10 minutes of your time to post on social media, or a donation of $10, your small steps add up to big change. Champion Survivors. Share how you re giving with everyone you know and inspire them to give too! Your efforts help create a community that champions survivors.

CAASE & Giving Tuesday We are the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE) and we envision a community free from all forms of sexual exploitation, including sexual assault and the commercial sex trade. Our work addresses the culture, institutions, and individuals that perpetrate, profit from, or support sexual exploitation. CAASE s theme for Giving Tuesday is Champion Survivors. Our work is informed by the lived experiences of survivors of sexual assault and sex trafficking. They tell us of how our community s response is a broken one. Survivors are often disbelieved, blamed, and criminalized while perpetrators are rarely held accountable. For 10 years, CAASE -with help from friends like you- has fought to champion survivors, improve laws, and educate future allies. We re dedicated to demanding change and finding ways to champion survivors. Whether that s representing them in court to ensure their needs are met and their rights protected, or advocating to policymakers to ensure perpetrators are held accountable. We want to help create a community that champions survivors.

Taking a Look at Sexual Exploitation Sexual exploitation can be a loaded issue to talk about and you may not know where to start. Here is a brief overview of how sexual exploitation impacts our communities and CAASE s work toward a transformed response. More than 16,000 women and girls are impacted by the commercial sex trade on any given day in Chicago. 90% of prostituted women in local studies, report being physically and sexually abused by pimps, traffickers, and buyers of sex. Sexual Assault harms 1 out of every 4 women in the United States. Most sexual assaults are never reported because survivors fear that they will be ostracized, blamed, and disbelieved. CAASE Champions Survivors After enduring abuse both from pimps and his customers, Joel was able to get out of the sex trade. He had been arrested more than fifty times and had six prostitution-related convictions. His record was holding him back from moving on with his life and achieving goals like adopting a family and working as a counselor with at-risk youth. CAASE represented Joel and litigated his case under the Justice for Victims of Sex Trafficking Crimes Act, - a legislative initiative passed in 2011 and led by CAASE s End Demand Illinois campaign. As a result of this work, in 2014, Joel became the first man in the State of Illinois to have his prostitution convictions vacated. A college student who first came to CAASE for legal representation after being sexually assaulted, experienced serious stalking behavior from the perpetrator who was also a fellow classmate. CAASE represented the survivor and as a result of the trial, the Judge granted a two-year plenary stalking no contact order in favor of the client. The order requires the perpetrator to stay away from the survivor s home, work, and school, and can t contact her by any means. After receiving the stalking no contact order, the client was overjoyed with relief and had a new found sense of security. Winning this case filled me with relief, validation, and excitement. I know my husband and I can move forward and adopt a child, It shows that the last 10 years of my life have been validated. -Joel #ChampionSurvivors I feel a sense of relief, protection, freedom, and such gratitude to CAASE for helping me. - CAASE Client

Making connections

Get Social! Reach out to your networks now thru Nov. 28th!

Connecting with Your Networks You might be wondering how to get started with reaching out to your networks. No worries, we ve got a great tool for you. It helps to think of your social circles in groups. Use this nifty chart to map out your friends, family, colleagues, and others who you think would be interested in giving or sharing for #GivingTuesday. Family & Friends Professional Colleagues 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. People whose causes you support Your Social Network 1. 2. 3. 1. 2. 3. Note: Be sure to write down the best way to reach your contact. Indicate whether you should contact them by phone, email or social media.

Over the Phone Now that you have your list of contacts, get ready to pick up the phone and spread the word. Before calling, think about what made you become involved and why it matters to you. The most important thing is to be your awesome self! Use this sample to get you off to a good start. Hi this is. Are you busy? Wait for an answer. While chit-chat can be a good way to start the conversation, keep in mind that the longer you wait to get to the point, the harder it will be. And be careful not to give the impression to your friends that you are calling just to catch up, because that will seem insincere when you get to the real reason you are calling. You know, I m really excited lately about this Giving Tuesday campaign I m participating in on Tuesday, Nov. 28th. You pick a cause your passionate about and give something to show support. It can be volunteering time, making a donation, or helping spread the word. I chose to donate $25 to this amazing organization, the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation, (CAASE). They provide community support and free legal serviices for survivors of sexual exploitation. They also shift our community s focus to ending demand for commercial sex and create education curriculums so youth can be allies in ending sexual violence. [Insert a personal story - why this cause is important to you] Example: As you may know, my close friend was sexually assaulted last year. It was an extremely difficult time for her and what came afterward was even more disheartening. She had to navigate through a complicated legal system, and she had to deal with being blamed for her perpetrator s crime. I decided to get involved and do something to change how we support survivors of sexual violence. As I said earlier, I m donating $25 and reaching out to people to spread the word as far as possible to help CAASE reach their goal of $15,000. I was wondering if you d match my $25 gift and help me spread the word on Nov. 28th. Wait for an answer, and don t be afraid of the awkward silence. Silence means that they are thinking; it should be clear that it is their turn to speak. Also, resist the temptation to give your friend an easy out by saying, It s totally cool if you can t help out. That technique takes pressure off your friend, but it sends them the message that this cause is not that serious to you. If they say they will donate or share the campaign, simply say, Thank you. You re helping make a difference in the lives of survivors! Direct them to the donation page at www.caase.org/ givingtuesday. Be sure to thank your friend for donating. Then hang up the phone and pat yourself on the back. You ve just gotten us one step closer to reaching our goal!

Sending an Email Sample Draft Hi Jane! You know, I m really excited lately about this Giving Tuesday campaign I m participating in on Tuesday, Nov. 28th.
