Unit 1 Positive Lifestyle Choices and sport and active leisure Broad aim: Learners explore the positive lifestyle choices a person can make in order to lead a healthy and active life Academic year:... 1 (continued) The types of jobs available in each explored. Working in groups, learners carry out research into one sector and present findings back to the rest of the group. 3 LO1: Know about healthy Topic 1.1 Health and Topic 1.2 Positive lifestyle choices and their effects Topic 1.3 Eating a healthy and balanced diet Topic 1.4 Positive lifestyle choices: risk-taking activities and sleep patterns Wellbeing Introduction to positive lifestyle choices: Participation in regular exercise and physical activity Eating a healthy balanced diet Going to bed at regular times Discussion on what is and what it means to the learners. Guidelines for the amounts of physical activity participation for children and adults. Learners work out how much activity they take part in each week and compare their results to the guidelines. Discussion on how physical activity can be increased through incorporation into everyday, for example, walking to school, taking the stairs instead of lifts. Latest guidelines: American College of Sports Medicine guidelines Activity sheet 1.3 Physical activity diary Activity sheet 1.4 Healthy eating - Examining food labels Food pyramid Units 2 and 3 Discussion on which foods are healthy and which foods are not healthy. Examination and discussion on the food pyramid. Tutor-led theory on macronutrients and micronutrients and approximate amounts that should be eaten on a daily basis. In small groups discussion on what times learners go to bed and get up in the morning and approximate number of hours of sleep per night. 4 LO1: Know about healthy Topic 1.4 Positive lifestyle choices: risk-taking activities and sleep patterns Positive risk-taking activities Learners take part in a positive risktaking activity such as a high ropes course, abseiling or rock climbing. After the session, learners discuss how they felt when they realised what they had to do and how they felt once they had completed the activity. Access to an outdoor education centre with positive risk-taking activities 5 LO1: Know about healthy Topic 1.6 Negative lifestyle choices and their effects Negative lifestyle choices: - Misuse of drugs - Excessive alcohol consumption A guest speaker could come in to discuss the effects of excessive alcohol consumption and the misuse of drugs. Learners carry out research to find media articles relating to drink/drug misuse and feed back to the rest of the class. To test learners understanding of the subject matter they can complete some exam style questions. 6 LO1: Know about healthy Topic 1.6 Negative lifestyle choices and their effects Negative lifestyle choices: - Smoking - Overparticipation in exercise - Low participation in physical activity - Over-eating Learners should work in small groups to research one of the following negative choices: low participation in physical activity; over-participation in physical activity; over-eating and smoking. Each group should present their findings to the rest of the class. Learners could then complete sample exam questions to test their understanding of the subject content. Sample exam questions 8 LO2: Know about influences on lifestyle choices Topic 1.8 Influences on lifestyle choices - People - Image - Media - Culture Working in small groups, learners discuss what influences them in the lifestyle choices that they make and how a particular person has influenced them, for example, family, peers and role models. Learners present their group findings to the rest of the class. Learners review a range of different magazines, journals and newspapers containing lots of advertising with sports people and celebrities. They then feed back to the rest of the group how they think these images can affect a person s lifestyle choices. Learners design a questionnaire to ask a range of different people why different methods of participation appeal to them. Examples of questionnaires used in the sport and active leisure industry Units 2 and 7 Learners supervised whilst asking the public their questions from their questionnaire. 13 LO3: Understand the importance of participation in sport and active leisure Topic 1.10 Different participant groups Participant groups Working in small groups each group researches the participation requirements for people from different groups: - different ability - different genders - children - older people - people with physical or learning difficulties - obese people - people with injuries - people from different socioeconomic backgrounds - people from different cultures or religions. Activity sheet 1.5 Participation in sport and active leisure with different groups Units 2 and 7 Learners can visit sport and active leisure centres and carry out research to find out how the centre and the staff cater for these different groups. 15 LO4: Understand how lifestyle choices impact on the health and of Topic 1.5 Healthy lifestyle choices: psychological and social benefits Effects of positive lifestyle choices: - Psychological effects - Social effects Learners complete a psychological questionnaire which explores such factors as their confidence, anxiety, stress etc. Learners take part in a strenuous physical activity session such as a circuit class or cross country run, then complete the questionnaire again. Learners then compare the pre-exercise and post-exercise questionnaire results to see if there are any differences. In small groups learners discuss how positive lifestyle choices have social effects on their lifestyle. 16 LO4: Understand how lifestyle choices impact on the health and of Topic 1.6 Negative lifestyle choices and their effects Effects of negative lifestyle choices: - Physical effects Class discussion on smoking and the harmful effects it has on the body. Tutor to split learners into groups and research one of the following physical effects of negative choices: obesity, type 2 diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease. Learners find out: - the causes of the physical effects - the associated health problems. 17 LO4: Understand how lifestyle choices impact on the health and of Topic 1.6 Negative lifestyle choices and their effects Effects of negative lifestyle choices: - Psychological effects - Social effects The tutor to lead a class discussion on the psychological effects of negative lifestyle choices. Learners to review their local area to see if there are places that have suffered from anti-social behaviour. Possibly a guest speaker from the police force could come in to discuss these issues and how sport and active leisure provision has been or could be implemented to benefit the community. Local papers Access to the internet 18 LO4: Understand how lifestyle choices impact on the health and of Topic 1.7 Eating disorders Effects of eating disorders A guest speaker (possibly a person who has recovered from an eating disorder) could come in to discuss the effects of eating disorders. The female athlete triad is a sporting example of where some females suffer from eating disorders, excessive exercise participation and a loss of menstruation this is a topic that could also be discussed by an elite female athlete who has suffered from this disorder. Learners work in pairs to assess their own lifestyle and work out how they can improve their diet and physical activity levels. Discussion on work-life balance what it is and how can it be improved? Discussion on ways in which learners can incorporate more positive risk-taking activities into their lifestyle. 24 LO5: Understand how health and Topic 1.12 Improving an individual s health and Improvements that can be made: - Giving up smoking - Reduction of alcohol intake - Sleep quality A person from the NHS comes in to discuss methods of stopping smoking, the benefits associated with stopping and ways to reduce alcohol consumption. 25 LO5: Understand how health and Topic 1.11 Analysis of effects of lifestyle changes Topic 1.12 Improving an individual s health and Assessing the lifestyle of an individual Learners assess each other s, identify any negative lifestyle choices and suggest improvements that can be made to help improve that person s lifestyle.
