HIGHLIGHTS The Newsletter of the LOMA Society of Waterloo Spring 2011 Greetings from your President Message from the President Spring 2011 When I first started volunteering for the LOMA board, I believe in 2006, I had no idea how important this connection would be for me. When I left one company and started at another, it was like I left a wonderful world of friends behind. What I found absolutely fascinating is that people in the insurance industry, never really get out of insurance. If they leave, surprising you can usually find them at another insurance company. If you look around KW, you will find that many people have been at more one insurance company and some even at three, or they go back to one that they left before. You know that saying the grass is always greener really? One of the things that I can say is that I have always loved working in the insurance industry no matter what company I have worked for. I think a lot of it has to be the people. Think about how many times you run into people that you know from working with them at one time or another. I find it absolutely wonderful to meet up with people at the LOMA lunches and dinners to reconnect and to stay connected. The opportunity to meet new people and chat is also there whether it is at our LOMA meetings or the conferences that are put on each year. We all have a lot of industry knowledge. Sharing information and ideas help us all develop and grow both personally and our companies. We continue to learn from each other with surveys or discussion groups or emails with each company. And yes we hire people back and forth from one insurance company to another. On the board this year for Waterloo, are some really great people. And if you have read previous messages from the president, you would know this. A lot of them have been on the board for many years. It is also a place to connect, learn and laugh. This team of people are 1

committed to providing the best for our society and our area. We have a blend from Sun Life, Manulife, Equitable Life, Faith Life and Independents. We also have 2 trainers that while they took a break this spring, are committed to help us continue to deliver in class courses for people working on their FLMI designation. They are Renee Robertson from Manulife Financial and Sue Langdon from Arca Financial Group. Both should be commended for their time and excellence to teaching. Whether we are working on bringing you guest speakers on topics we feel are relevant for our changing times, trainers, or trying hard to get you to connect, we enjoy what we do and have fun doing it also. Of course we continue to try and get feedback and information from our members. Our surveys are important to us. If you have any subject or speakers that you would like for us to arrange at one of our meetings, just provide this information to us. We would be happy to look into it further. This year is our 50th anniversary. During the past few months the board members have met to discuss what we should do for our 50th anniversary year for LOMA Waterloo Chapter. We have a fair bit of history in boxes saved over the years from previous board members who have moved it from office to office and handing it all over to the next members. We have looked through a lot of meeting minutes and LOMA member booklets, pouring through news articles to see what might be of interest to members. There is certainly a lot of history in the KW region with so many offices all involved in insurance. During our November 2011 meeting this year, we plan to get you thinking about the past and interacting with people which possibly might be in your future. What we have planned so far I think will be a fun evening and something different. We encourage everyone to plan on attending, and to talk to fellow employees who have their FLMI and get them to come. Networking is key in this day and age, and face to face is one of the best ways to keep the connection solid after all don t you find that sometimes it is hard to remember someone until you see their face or maybe I m just getting older.
