WHY DO WE BOWL FOR THE CURE? We bowl because we don t want to lose our mothers, sisters, wives, grandmothers, and friends to this disease. We need your help to find a cure and end breast cancer forever! Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among women and the leading cause of death among women worldwide. In the United States, a woman has a 1 in 8 risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. One woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes and one woman will die of breast cancer every 13 minutes in the U.S. Men can also get breast cancer. Welcome Teams! On behalf of everyone at the Susan G. Komen Baton Rouge Bowl for the Cure, I want to thank each of you personally for your commitment to form and lead a team in the 2nd Annual Komen Baton Rouge Bowl for the Cure. Susan G. Komen for the Cure began almost 30 years ago based on a promise Nancy G. Brinker made to her sister Susan G. Komen. Susan died of invasive breast cancer at the young age of 36, leaving behind two small children. Her battle came at a time when the words breast cancer were rarely spoken aloud, and many women suffered in silence then died far too young. We are proud to tell you that much has changed since then. People now hear the lifesaving message of early detection, take action to get screened, and encourage others to take care of their breast health. Also, breast cancer patients are not only surviving, they are thriving. The Komen Baton Rouge Affiliate recently celebrated its 15 th Baton Rouge Race for the Cure. Since our first race, we ve invested $2.4 million to fund local breast cancer screening, treatment and education programs. More than 75 percent of net proceeds raised stays in our 10-parish service area with the funds remaining dollars supporting national research. In fact, next to the U.S. government, Komen for the Cure is the largest funder of breast cancer research in the world. New for this year s Bowl is the Komen Kingpin fundraising title. The team that raises the most donations will be crowned the first annual Komen Kingpins! Also new is the Komen Costume Contest. Show your Komen spirit in your attire and your team could be the winner. Your leadership serves as a generous tribute to those whose journey has ended and to those whose very presence is an inspiration. Every dollar you raise brings us closer to a future without breast cancer. Because you re encouraging others to help through a team; you are multiplying your impact for the cure! Thank you, Jennifer Parker Teams Committee Chair, 2011 Susan G. Komen Baton Rouge Bowl for the Cure Questions? The Running Ribbon is a registered trademark of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast health awareness should begin early with clinical breast exams starting at age 20 and mammograms starting at age 40 for normal risk levels. Learn about your family s health history and talk to your doctor to understand your personal risk level. Know what s normal for you through self exams and report any changes right away!

Baton Rouge Komen Affiliate Service Area YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE! One in eight (1 in 8) women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Louisiana leads the nation in the rate of breast cancer deaths, even though the number of women diagnosed is below the national average. Later stage diagnosis contributes to our high death rate. Breast cancer is responsible for the largest share of cancer-related spending in the U.S. When detected at later stages, treatment is up to 5 times more expensive. TAKE ACTION! Now that you understand what s at stake, take these three action steps today! 1. GET SCREENED and encourage others! Beginning with self awareness and clinical exams by age 20. 2. Be a champion for the cause - ADVOCATE! 3. Support Komen Baton Rouge s work - DONATE! Your dollars TRULY MAKE A DIFFERENCE AS A DONATION: AS A FUNDRAISER: $50 = 400 facts sheets for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients $275 = Three-month supply of important post treatment medicine $100 = A potentially life-saving diagnostic mammogram $485 = One fine needle biopsy to check for cancerous tissue $150 = A quality wig for a patient that suffered hair loss as a result of treatment $1,000 $2,500 = Ten potentially lifesaving diagnostic mammograms = Genetic testing to determine presence of breast cancer genes TEAM TOOLKIT Page 3

Komen for the Cure Page 6 TEAM TOOLKIT DID YOU KNOW? Early detection is a key to survival. When breast cancer is detected early, before it spreads beyond the breast, the 5-year survival rate is 98 percent. Once the cancer spreads to other parts of the body, the survival rate plummets to 23 percent.

Recruiting Teammates Start a team with your family and friends in honor of a survivor or loved one who had breast cancer Form a team with your co-workers or at your place of worship; recruit more members by hosting an informative meeting - a fantastic opportunity to boost team spirit. Get competitive and challenge other workplace teams to see who can raise the most funds! Pin Pals Motivating Your Team Set a Goal - Be a LIFESAVER. People from all walks of life have been affected by breast cancer and want to help. Urge each member to harness the POWER OF 10! If each team member gives 10 people the opportunity to donate $10, your team alone could provide mammograms for at least 6 women who might otherwise put off yearly screening for lack of insurance coverage. Buddy up! Create a buddy system within your team so that team members are checking in and encouraging each other. This will also help lessen the load on the team captain. Organize. Keep track of each team member s progress. Some will need more encouragement than others. Play. Create an activity that brings your team together to bond. Organize a team potluck or a picnic. Have a bowling competition, wine tasting or bike ride. The possibilities are endless. Bond. The more cohesive your team is, the more likely your team members will help each other along the way with fundraising, training and motivation. If you have good memories before Bowl for the Cure, you re sure to have even better memories after the event. Last year s participants still talk about the fun event Theme Your Team - It s All In The Name! Come up with an exciting name for your team Name your team in honor or memory of someone Make your team name meaningful so that your team members can talk passionately about it to donors Tell a corporation you will wear their logo at the event in exchange for a large donation For every additional $10 donation you ll receive an extra entry into the door prize drawing! Show team unity with fashion... dress to impress! Ever wanted to wear a pink tutu, pink tights, pink hair or outrageous pink hats? You ll see it all at Bowl! Plan an event to benefit everyone s fundraising goals Be there for your teammates with advice, support, understanding, and information. TEAM TEAM CAPTAIN TOOLKIT Page 7

FUNDRAISING Your Bowl entry fee gets us to the lanes... Fundraising Save Lives! Never miss an opportunity: Now is not the time to be shy! Announce, call and email every person you know that you are participating in Bowl for the Cure because your hope and purpose is to eradicate breast cancer. Ask for donations and tell your friends to spread the word. This is a great opportunity to educate others and fundraise at the same time. Be a BFTC Sponsor! Sponsors provide the critical platform that allows volunteers and survivors to take action through the Bowl. Help us expand that platform while partnering your business with a cause that touches us all. Help Bowl 2011 be record-breaking in both participation and donations. PINK OUT! Join other businesses in the Greater Baton Rouge area and PINK OUT! your store/door front. Imagine how good survivors will feel when they see you are with them in their fight. Plus, you will remind women to take action and get screened. You can be an official Komen Baton Rouge PINK OUT! sponsor with just a $250 donation and become eligible to join the fun in the Affiliate s best PINK OUT! online contest. Cookies for the Cure Bake Sale That s the way the cancer crumbles - Host a bake sale! Ask a local bakery to donate a batch of pink breast cancer ribbon-shaped cookies in order to promote the cause. Another option is to bake a batch of bowling ball cupcakes and leave them in your company break room. Include a note about your involvement in the race and a donations greatly appreciated jar next to the treats. Get Pink! Pink lapel ribbons are always in demand during October, so get crafty and make a supply of simple loop and safety pin pink ribbons. Sell them at work, church or school and feel good about educating others and fundraising. Gift Substitution In lieu of a gift for your birthday, wedding, retirement or house-warming party, ask your friends and family to make a donation to the Bowl for the Cure. QUESTIONS? Contact Jennifer Parker - teams@komenbatonrouge.org, the Affiliate office at (225) 615-8740, or www.komenbatonrouge.org In 2011, the Baton Rouge Affiliate granted $547,000 to 11 medical and health programs providing education, screening and treatment services. But we need to reach out to more women in our area. Women in our state die of breast cancer at the highest rate in the nation, and that s simply not acceptable. - Lucie J.
