21st Annual Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure October 18, 2014
THANK YOU FOR BEING A TEAM CAPTAIN! Participating in the Race for the Cure as a team is an exciting way to motivate friends, family, classmates and co-workers to help find a cure for breast cancer. Spend the day having fun with those you love while supporting the Komen promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever! Creating a race team can also be about honoring or celebrating the life of those who have survived or faced breast cancer. Teams create unity, which empowers members to keep looking for and finding ways to fundraise and volunteer outside of the race. Here at Komen Lowcountry, teams come in all sizes. We recommend a minimum of 10 team members in order to be eligible for fundraising prizes. The more members you have on your team, the more you ll be able to accomplish as a team. As a team captain, your role is very important. You ll help create goals for the team while managing fundraising tasks and recruiting new members. Team captains are the main motivators for their members; in this role, you make a huge impact on our race success each and every year. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. We re always here to help. Sincerely, Susan G. Komen Lowcountry Staff and 2014 Race Committee Contact Information: 9300 Medical Plaza Drive, North Charleston, SC 29406 (843)556-8011 www.komenlowcountry.org

WHERE DO YOUR FUNDS GO AFTER THE RACE? Community Impact The Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is the local resource for women who need breast cancer screening, diagnostic and support services. Through annual events including the Race for the Cure and individual contributions, Komen Lowcountry raises funds that enable women to detect and survive breast cancer. Seventy-five percent of all funds raised by the Affiliate stay in our service area to fund breast health programs for women who would not otherwise have access to screening and treatment. Twenty-five percent of funds raised supports the Susan G. Komen Research Programs. Komen Lowcountry has raised more than $5.8 million in local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects in our 17- county service area. FUNDRAISING IS EASY! Tips and Ideas There are hundreds of ideas and opportunities to organize and host fundraising events with friends, family and the community. We ve listed a few to help you get started: Pizza Night Ask a local pizza restaurant to supply enough pizza for dinner for you and your friends as a donation to your team and the cause. Ask friends joining for your fun night to pay $2 per slice as a donation to your fundraising goal. Garage Sale Collect clothing, toys and more from each team member and hold a garage/yard sale. Advertise that all proceeds will go to your race team and benefit the Lowcountry Affiliate of Susan G. Komen. Sell Space on a Shirt Sell small blocks of space on the shirt your team plans to wear on race day for a suggested $20 donation. The companies buying the space will love the chance to do a little advertising while supporting your team s goal. Social Media A simple and free way for you to spread the word and fundraise is through social media. By sharing a link on your Facebook or Twitter accounts, you can encourage people to learn about the cause and donate from the comfort of their homes!
COMMITMENT IS KEY. HOW CAN YOU KEEP TEAM MEMBERS MOTIVATED? Keeping your team motivated is an important role in your position as a team leader. Knowing the right ways to push each member to their full fundraising potential will ensure that you reach your team s goal. Motivation means remembering the real reason you all are racing and striving to be the best fundraising team the Lowcountry has ever seen! Some great tips: Set goals: It s important to gather and set a fundraising goal together from the start. This lets the team know what s expected of each member as well as what s expected of the team as a whole. Ask each team member to start out with a realistic goal of $100, and see how far you can go from there. Get to know each other: When putting together your team, keep in mind that all members may not be familiar with one another. Plan a gathering so team members can get to know each other and bond as they embark on this wonderful mission. Be organized: This is key to having a successful team and fundraising event. Once members are aware of their goals, create an organized agenda of the events you ve planned. Record individual and team progress once a week. Communicate often: Communicate regularly so that everyone is up-to-date, especially to members who miss an event or meeting. Celebrate all efforts: Keep members motivated by celebrating individual and team performance. This shows that you acknowledge their achievements and respect their efforts. It can create some friendly competition among members, thus encouraging more fundraising! Remember, the more money your team raises, the better the prizes and the more funds that go back out to our community as life-saving grants!
FUN STUFF! Encourage your team to come up with a clever team name. Possible ideas include naming your team in honor or memory of someone. You could also pick something fun or easy for donors to remember. Dress it up! Think of a cute or funny outfit for each team member to wear that represents your team name. Silly hats or pink tutus are very popular. See if you can come up with your own style. Design and create a tank or shirt for the team to wear. Enter your design in the team t-shirt contest and all funds donated as votes on Race day will go toward your fundraising efforts. RACE DAY FAQS What is Sleep in for the Cure?
