TEAM CAPTAIN WELCOME Dear Team Captain, On behalf of everyone at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in partnership with Na amat, we want to thank each of you personally for your commitment to form and lead a team in the 2nd year of the historic Susan G. Komen Israel Race for the Cure. On May 3, 2012, Komen will bring its signature Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series back to Jerusalem, inviting thousands of people of all faiths and nationalities to join the race to end breast cancer forever in Israel and all around the world. Komen is honored to have Na amat, the largest professional women s movement in Israel, serve as our lead NGO partner for the 2012 Race. One hundred percent of the funds raised through the Komen Israel Race for the Cure will go towards programs that address breast cancer and women s health needs in Israel. Komen has been investing in Israel since 1994, funding nearly $3 million in research and working with Israeli and U.S. Jewish organizations to fulfill its Promise to end breast cancer forever. Your participation is a beautiful tribute to those whose journey has ended and to those whose very presence is an inspiration. Every step you take and every dollar you raise brings us closer to a world without breast cancer. Because you are taking those steps with a team you re multiplying your impact on the cause. HOW TO REGISTER YOUR TEAM Team Captains must register first to start the team. First, think of a team name, then go to Komen. org/israel > Click Here to Start or Join a Team. Then, click the Start a Team option and follow the instructions. Once registered, team captains automatically receive their own personal team web page. Captains can log in to their personal Participant Center to edit their team web page and start recruiting team members and donations. Here s an example of what a team web page looks like: As a team captain, you can change the photo and text displayed on your personal team webpage by logging into your Participant Center. RECRUITING TEAMMATES Once you ve created your team online, it s time to contact prospective team members and invite them to join your team. After registering online, you should have received an email that provided a link to log in to your Participant Center to view your personal team web page. From your Participant Center you can invite others to join your team, view your team roster, email team members with messages, update your team web page and thank your donors. You can access your Participant Center from the Teams tab at www.. Tips for recruiting teammates: Set a Goal & Communicate. Setting a team recruitment and fundraising goal is important in getting your team started. Having a goal gives your team members something to strive towards. Send regular emails to keep the team inspired and informed about your fundraising progress. Use Your Resources. Use the resources available to you from the Participant Center! Did you know you can customize, or create a shortcut, to the web address for your personal or team web page? Make it shorter and easier to remember and share with other people. After logging into your Participant Center, click on the Personal Page tab. In the URL settings area, click edit. Type the text you want to use. You can only use letter and numbers. To avoid problems, do not leave any spaces between your entry. Click save. Example http://organization.org/goto/terry_brown Personalize. Ask a survivor or co-survivor to share her/his story in an email or newsletter. Share inspiring stories with the entire team. By putting a face on breast cancer, you will make the Race personal and it will add to everyone s commitment to participate and fundraise. Advertise/Publicize. Use newsletters, payroll stuffers, flyers, emails, etc., to recruit. Ready-to-print flyers are available in the TEAM section of the website (www.komen.org/ Israel). Simply write in your Team name and post in your break room, a bulletin board, etc. Compete. Start a friendly competition among departments/buildings with a prize in mind. 5
REGISTERING TEAMMATES Team members will register and pay individually. Encourage them to do so online. First, make sure your teammates know the name of your team. When they do register, they should select the Join a Team option and search for your team name. Team members will search for your team name on this screen. Bring your family and friends together from around the globe to take part in the largest grassroots effort to fight breast cancer. If new team members have been already registered for the Komen Israel Race for the Cure, they must email IsraelRace@komen.org to be officially added to your team. 6
TEAM FUNDRAISING As the leader of your team, and therefore a leader in the fight to end breast cancer, it s important for you to know and share with your team members the importance of fundraising. Simply registering and showing up on Race Day will raise awareness, but it s the fundraising dollars that will help find the cures. One of the best ways to inspire your team members to fundraise is to lead by example and start fundraising yourself. To begin, familiarize yourself with the fundraising tools available at www.! This includes a poster as well as step-by-step instructions on how to send fundraising emails. All fundraising tools are also available inside your Participant Center. Never miss an opportunity! Now is not the time to be shy! Let every person know that you are participating in the Israel Race for the Cure. Advertise, call and e-mail family, friends and co-workers. Let them know your hope and purpose is to eradicate breast cancer and ask for donations. This is a great opportunity to educate your community and fundraise at the same time. Use your Participant Center to help you fundraise and recruit team members. Log in to your Participant Center by visiting Komen.org > TEAMS > Participant Center. You will need to the username and password you set up at the time of registration to log in. Your Race registration confirmation email contains your username and password. Can t remember it? Email us at IsraelRace@komen.org and we ll help you get started. Although many of your donors will make online donations through your team page, some will prefer to mail a check. If this is the case, please mail a completed donation form (in the Handouts section of this toolkit) with a check to: Susan G. Komen Israel Race for the Cure P.O. KEEP YOUR TEAM MOTIVATED Keep your team motivated and excited about this year s Race! Theme your team. Make your team name meaningful so that your team members can talk passionately to donors. Design t-shirts, signs, banners or flags. Have fun and be creative! Challenge one another. Encourage your team to take the POWER of TEN fundraising challenge. Ask each team member to ask at least 10 people for $10. Connect. Don t assume the other teammates have met everyone or remember their names. Make sure to introduce everyone each and every time you meet. Plan a team event. Create an activity that brings your team together to bond. Organize a team potluck or family picnic. Have a bowling competition, wine tasting or bike ride. The possibilities are endless. Bond. The more cohesive your team is, the more likely your team members will help each other along the way with fundraising, training and motivation to show up for the event. If you have good memories before the Israel Race for the Cure, you re sure to have even better memories after the event. Be there. Be there for your teammates with advice, support, understanding and information. Educate your team members. Make sure your team members know what the Race does with the funds raised and why the need is so great. Share breast cancer facts and figures with your team to encourage them to keep recruiting and fundraising, Post Race Gathering. Plan a post Race gathering to thank team members and to share Race experiences. Consider having lunch together! 8
