ELGIN COUNTY January 2012 4-H NEWSLETTER President s Message By Henry Helder Happy New Year to each one of you and may it be a year of enjoyment! Take one day at a time and enjoy each day to the fullest. Some remarks about the past year. Thanks to all 4-H members and leaders for being in 4-H in Elgin in 2011. I hope each one of you learned or picked up something new that will help you in 2012 and the future. Congratulations are in order to the 4-H members that represented us at out of county events, especially at the Royal Winter Fair. The grand champion showman in sheep, Cody MacKinnon is from our county. Congratulations Cody! The rest of you might not have had this result but life is like that. We are not always first in the class. It is the enjoyment and experience you gain that matters, as well as meeting 4-H members from all over Canada. What s coming in 2012? Mark down Saturday, February 11, 2012 as this is when we are having a combined 4-H Leaders Annual meeting and workshop at the Union United Church. Lunch is included and free! See details on page 2 of this newsletter. The 4-H membership dues for Elgin will be set at this meeting. As well, County directors will be chosen and a new board will be chosen from these directors. The positions of secretary and membership coordinator will need to be filled this year. Pat Palmer and Barb Burgess are both retiring. Thanks for the work both of you have done for many years in Elgin 4-H. It was a pleasure to work with you and we are sure going to miss you. At this meeting the dairy leaders will have an opportunity to set their program. I hope each leader will be there. Another upcoming event is the 4-H Awards and Fun night, which will be held at the Shedden Complex on March 6, 2012. See full details on page 2 of this newsletter. There will be a short program consisting of a presentation of awards to all 4-H members completing their club in 2011 and some major awards to be presented. There will be some fun games, as well as a bit of what 4-H is all about. I encourage all 4-H members new and old plus leaders to be there. This year we will have at least one new 4-H club. Leaders Norman and Anne Stansell will be running a plowmen s club. I wish all of you, new and old 4-H members and leaders, a successful year in 4-H in 2012. Upcoming 4-H Events for 2012 Future Leaders In Action Provincial Opportunity for Current 4-H youth ages 16-21 Future Leaders In Action (FLIA) is an advanced level interactive leadership development opportunity that will combine leadership training and fun activities for a four-day, three-night experience participants will never forget. The leadership training modules will surround facilitation skills, group development and dynamics, teambuilding activities, high ropes courses, group initiatives and more. Application Deadline: January 26, 2012 Event Date: March 10-13, 2012 Camp Kawartha, Peterborough, ON Participant cost is only $200.00 + HST = $226.00, for a program valued at over $500.00! Only 50 delegates are able to attend this opportunity, so if you are interested get your application in today! Looking forward to 2013 and 2014, there will be additional $5 increases each year, making the yearly membership fees $70 and $75, respectively. NB. Elgin County membership fee information will be communicated after the Annual Meeting to be held on February 11, 2012. 4-H Ontario NEW Participant Agreement Form Before you attend the 1st meeting of each 4-H club you enrol in 2012, visit the new 4-H Ontario website and complete the Participant Agreement Form. A health & safety, photo/media release and member code of conduct form all in one. Fill it out, save it, print it and submit to your leader, along with your membership fee. All Occasion Craft Club - Wallacetown Lifeskills By Pam Silva This club was a lot of fun. Each meeting was a different occasion and the crafts were as follows: Thanksgiving: Painted charger plates were made with a glittering pumpkin and leaves. Halloween: Paving stones were painted and decorated to look like Frankenstein. Christmas: A melting snowman was made from wood and styrofoam. Valentines: Valentines cards and a mini gift box were made. St. Patrick s Day: An awesome 4-H Kleenex box was made showing the emblem, pledge, and Motto. Rosemary Goble was the guest that night and demonstrated how to build the box. We used a variety of cool tools, such as the Cuttlebug, to assemble the box. Easter: A large coffee can was decorated and assembled as an Easter Bunny Basket. Melted Snowman In this club we also judged a class of Christmas Ornaments. Making Easter Bunny Basket For the achievement program we had each member bring a guest with them. We then broke into 3 groups and made 3 different Christmas decorations. The decorations were; paper towel rolls painted, cut and assembled into snowflakes using pipe cleaners; tissue paper flowers; and mice made out of felt that held a candy cane. These decorations were all donated to our local church for them to sell at their annual Bazaar. 4-H Kleenex Box cover Elgin County 4-H Newsletter-January 2012 Page 5

Volunteer Conference & Annual Meeting Our Future Looks Bright! Hosted by Region 2 Volunteers When: March 23 25, 2012 Where: Waterloo Inn and Conference Centre, 475 King St. N Waterloo, ON N2J 2Z5 Registration form can be found online at: www.4-hontario.ca Choose the Volunteers link / Volunteer Opportunities / Conference and Annual Meeting *** Registration deadline is January 27th, 2012. Late registrations and incomplete forms cannot be accepted. Also, this year the third and fourth participants from each Association can attend free of charge. Interested in attending CAM this year? It s not too late! Please contact any of the board members to get signed up today! (See page 4 for your Elgin County contact information). Who Attends CAM? All 4-H Volunteers are encouraged to attend CAM. Each 4-H Association is encouraged to send at least two people (one must be their Association Representative who will be the voting delegate for the Annual Meeting). All registrations will be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis so make sure to get your registration form in fast. Why Should I Come To CAM? CAM is an opportunity to learn, have fun, enhance 4-H skills and make friends with 4-H Volunteers from across the province. Through fun social recreation activities you will meet other 4-H Volunteers from across Ontario who have similar values and passions for youth engagement. You will be refreshed with new ideas to take back to your Club, fellow Volunteers, Association and Region.
