Keeping a Healthy Mouth During Pregnancy Why is it important to keep your mouth and teeth healthy? Women with healthy teeth have healthier babies Children born to mothers that have cavities tend to have more cavities Oral health is part of your overall health Brush and Floss Daily Brush your teeth twice a day, especially before you go to sleep. Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Turn the bristles against the gum line and brush gently. Brush the front, back, and top of each tooth, and also your tongue. Use dental floss once a day. Flossing between teeth removes plaque (bacteria) where your toothbrush can t reach. Plaque can harden under your gums and cause problems. Using a fluoride or antibacterial mouth rinse (ACT, Listerine, Scope) makes your teeth more resistant to cavities. If you can t brush your teeth because you feel sick, rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouth rinse. If you vomit, rinse your mouth with water. Keep a Healthy Diet Drink water at least a few times a day, especially between meals and snacks. Do not eat sugary foods or sugary drinks (especially soda) between meals. These foods and drinks have acid that dissolves the surface of your teeth, and sugar that causes cavities. Try not to snack on these foods. Drinking water helps wash away the sugar and acid from your teeth. Water or low-fat milk Fruits and vegetables Whole grains (bread, crackers) Dairy (milk, yogurt, cheese) GOOD to Eat Lean meats (fish, poultry) Eggs, beans and nuts Sugar-free gum Sugar Soda (including diet soda) Sports drinks (Gatorade) Fruit juice Vitamin water Cookies, candy and cake Get Dental Care Get a dental checkup during pregnancy. It is safe to have dental care when you are pregnant. The germs that cause cavities can be passed on to your newborn. Don t put it off until after you have the baby. See a dentist right away if you have: Red, sore, or swollen gums Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing your teeth Gums that are pulling away from your teeth Sore teeth, sensitive teeth, or painful chewing Bad breath that won t go away If you smoke, talk to your doctor or dentist on ways to quit smoking. BAD to Eat www.sschc.org 414-672-1353 facebook.com/sschc @16thStreetCHC
