YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE Here in Pittsburgh, supporting the American Cancer Society is a tremendous investment. We actually spend more dollars in this community than we raise. 24/7 HELP We are there for cancer patients and their families 24 hours a day, seven days a week at cancer.org or by calling 1-800-227-2345. Our cancer information specialists can help patients and their families locate a hospital, understand cancer and treatment options, learn what to expect and how to plan, help address insurance concerns, find financial resources, connect with a local support group, and more. ROAD TO RECOVERY Having cancer is hard. Finding a ride to treatment shouldn t be. The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery program provides free rides to cancer patients to and from treatments. Trained volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their personal vehicles to help patients get to the treatments they need. In 2015, we provided 1,447 rides in Allegheny and surrounding counties. RESEARCH Your support helps the American Cancer Society invest in groundbreaking cancer research. Currently, the Society is investing nearly $23 million in 46 cancer research grants in Pennsylvania. PATIENT LODGING The American Cancer Society provides free overnight lodging to cancer patients and their caregivers who have to travel away from home for treatment. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for it allows patients to focus on the most important thing: getting well. REACH TO RECOVERY The American Cancer Society Reach To Recovery program matches trained volunteer breast cancer survivors to people facing or living with breast cancer. Our volunteers give cancer patients and their family members the opportunity to ask questions, talk about their fears and concerns, and express their feelings. Our Reach To Recovery volunteers have been there, and they offer understanding, support, and hope. LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER Look Good Feel Better workshops help women with cancer manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment. Trained volunteer beauty professionals teach simple techniques on skin care, makeup, and nail care, and give practical tips on hair loss, wigs and head coverings. The program is a collaboration of the American Cancer Society, the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, and the Professional Beauty Association. Similarly, the American Cancer Society has Wig Banks at 27 hospitals throughout Western Pennsylvania to provide free wigs to patients who lose their hair from various treatment modalities. GOLF FORE A CURE Why support the American Cancer Society? You probably know that the American Cancer Society invests in research to help find cures, but we actually do a lot more than that. We attack cancer from every angle. We help people stay well by working to prevent cancer or detect it early, when it s most treatable. We help people get well we re here for anyone facing cancer with the information, resources, and support they might need when and where they need it. We also fight back against cancer by working with elected officials to pass laws that defeat cancer and bring communities together to join the fight. The aim of the Society s research program is to determine the causes of cancer and support efforts to prevent and cure the disease. The American Cancer Society is the largest source of private, non-profit cancer research funds in the US, second only to the federal government in total dollars spent. To date, the American Cancer Society has invested $3.8 billion in cancer research and has funded 46 Nobel Laureates. We have played a role in nearly every major cancer breakthrough in recent history. The bottom line is that the American Cancer Society is the most effective cancer-fighting organization in the world. We are doing the most to help people with cancer today and are working tirelessly to find cures to end the disease tomorrow.
