1. List 10 symptoms of alcohol poisoning. Mental confusion/stupor/coma/inability to be roused, vomiting, seizures, slowed respiration, irregular heartbeat, hypothermia, and severe dehydration. 2. Define the term binge drinking. Drinking five or more alcoholic drinks at one sitting. 3. List the long term effects of alcohol has on the cardiovascular system. Heart damage to the heart muscle.

Enlarged heart from increased workload caused by alcohol. High blood pressure damages the heart and can cause heart attack and stroke. 4. Define the term cirrhosis. Liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue. Disease can lead to liver failure and death unless a liver transplant is performed.

5. List the three short term effects that alcohol has on the digestive system. Stomach some alcohol passes quickly from the stomach to the bloodstream. Stomach acid increases which often results in nausea and vomiting. Liver toxic chemicals are released as the liver metabolizes alcohol, causing inflammation and scarring. Kidneys kidneys increase urine output, which can cause dehydration.

6. Define the term alcoholic. An addict who is dependent on alcohol. 7. Medical researchers have found that drinking any sort of alcohol can cause these four physical reactions. Slows reflexes. Impaired judgement. Increased forgetfulness. Increase in risk-taking behaviors.

Stage 3 Addiction The person s life is now out of control, although they do no acknowledge this fact. If the alcoholic stopped drinking they would experience severe withdrawal symptoms.

Stomach Some alcohol passes quickly from the stomach into the bloodstream. Stomach acid production increases and often results in nausea and vomiting.

18. What are the short term effects of alcohol on breathing? Breathing Alcohol depresses nerves that control involuntary functions such as breathing. If an excessive amounts of alcohol is consumed, breathing may slow, become irregular, or stop. 19. What are the short term effects of alcohol on the brain? The brain becomes less able to control the body. Movement, speech, and vision may be affected.
