INTRODUCTION Welcome to Paris Bonjour! Welcome to the beginning of your new life in Paris! Thank you for your interest in happy, healthy and zen living. I hope your transition and adaptation to the City of Lights is easy and smooth. Many of us move here with lots of expectations and an idealized vision of what living in Paris is. Adjusting to a new culture, way of thinking and city requires, for some of us, a little bit of adjustment. I have lived in Mexico City, New York City and Paris. I know from personal experience that moving to a new place presents new opportunities for growth and expansion. But in each new place there are also moments of uncertainty 13

INTRODUCTION and unexpected challenges. I want to invite you today to follow along by reading these pages. I have collected my favorite stories and personal challenges in Paris to inspire you to be proactive in your health and happiness while you are here. This book will support you to fully embrace this new life adventure with optimism and positivity. It will give you ideas and strategies to take care of yourself, both your body and your mind. It doesn t matter how long you have already been living here or how long you plan to stay. The important thing is that today you have this mindful and gentle guide for a successful journey in Paris. By reading this book and following its exercises you are creating space to think about your own wellness. Hopefully, you will remember your time in the City of Lights as a positive turning point in your life. There are plenty of travel guides that are excellent ways to discover the highlights of this city. This book is not one of them. Instead, it s a new concept, a guide to taking care of yourself as you do all the fun and exciting things available in this fantastic city. As with any life transition, there are sure to be new challenges or unexpected intense moment along the way. Being prepared to cope with those challenges in a healthy way will help you lead a happier and healthier everyday life. Moving to a new city is an excellent opportunity to improve your lifestyle, your diet and your thoughts from the inside out. Please share your progress and celebrate each step forward! 14

Introduction to Happy, Healthy and Zen Living Take a moment to go through these pages, take notes and read along. I wish you a very happy and joyful stay in the City of Lights. Introduction to Happy, Healthy and Zen Living Before we move forward, I d like to introduce myself and share a brief overview of my own quest for health and happiness. I am convinced that we always have the choice: to settle for good enough or to seek out a better quality of life. It is up to each of us to keep looking for resources to improve our everyday lives. I realized the importance of healthier living for the first time in my early twenties. I was an undergraduate student in a competitive biomedical research program in Mexico City. My coping mechanisms back then were not healthy and I didn t know how to manage my own stress. I was headed toward the point of no return. It was a long journey and one that deserves its own book. What is relevant for today is that once I found the right support, I was able to get on a healthier path. My life slowly started to transition, one day at a time. Since then, I have continuously been collecting resources for healthier living. From Mexico, I moved to New York to continue my studies. It was during my time as a doctoral student at New 15

INTRODUCTION York University that I discovered yoga. I found myself in a demanding doctoral program feeling frustrated because I was not making substantial progress with my doctoral thesis research in the laboratory. After a couple of years of hard work, I had to start over. This was very tough to take in. While I had better strategies for stress management than I did in Mexico, I was still struggling with intense anxiety. I tried many different things to feel better. Yoga was one of them and quickly became an essential part of my life. It helped me transform my relationship to stressful situations. Above all, I learned to breathe properly and to relax. I was able to move forward. After completing my doctoral degree in biology, I decided to do a career transition into wellness. I learned to be grateful, to be happier, and to live in the present moment. But the most important lesson of all was the relevance of the connection between our minds and our bodies. I understood how essential is to care for both every day, not just some of the time. The third chapter of my life has taken place in Paris. I moved to Paris feeling the best I have ever felt in my life, both physically and emotionally. I assumed everything was going to be easy. I thought learning French would be easy. I thought health and happiness were a given. It was not part of my vision to struggle with health issues that got in the way of taking full advantage of what this city has to offer. You will read my story below. It was here in Paris that I turned to 16

Happy, Healthy & Zen a daily meditation practice and the study of mindfulness. This has been another essential addition to my well-being. Over the years, I have learned how to stay healthy, to think positively and to relax. I have a system in place that continues to evolve and that I now share with others through my work at Happy Healthy & Zen (happyhealthyandzen. com). I am honored to have the opportunity to support working professionals, families and international students in their transition to living in Paris. We focus on stress management strategies, building healthy habits and how to stay healthy while they are here. I do this through a combination of regular wellness workshops, speaking events, health coaching programs, yoga classes and meditation sessions. This book is an overview of my personal and professional journey in Paris for the past few years. The exercises in this book are drawn from the work I have been doing in my classes, workshops and coaching programs for the past several years. This information has been helpful and inspiring for others. I hope they are also helpful in your own adaptation and stay in Paris. Happy, Healthy & Zen From healthy eating to mindfulness, I have summed up what I ve learned from my experiences in the creation of Happy Healthy & Zen (HH&Z). 17

INTRODUCTION HH&Z in Paris is focused on three important pillars of wellbeing in our daily lives. 1. Happy: when we are happy, we re able connect to those things that make us feel alive and it is easy to take care of ourselves. Paris is a great place to practice feeling awake and alive. But for this to happen, we need the right nourishment. 2. Healthy: what we eat, how we eat it and when we eat it is an important part of nourishing ourselves. This process is individual and involves observation and paying attention to which foods make us feel good and which don t. Eventually, we learn to eat more of those that make us feel good and less of those that don t. It is key to always keep central the pleasure and enjoyment of our food. It is also essential to understand that there is nourishment that goes beyond what we put on our plates everyday. 3. Zen: For the purposes of this book, zen refers to the activities that help us stay calm. Those activities that help us find that quiet inner space and that support us in recharging our batteries when they are low. This includes sleep, digital detoxing, meditation, walking in the beautiful Paris parks, becoming mindful and learning to appreciate the good moments of each day. Below you will learn more about these concepts, both what they ve meant for my life in Paris, and also how you can adapt and apply them to your own daily life. 18

Happy, Healthy & Zen The lessons that you learn while you are in Paris will stay with you forever no matter where you go next. I encourage you to think of Paris as your playground, filled with opportunities to feel happy and alive. Create moments to connect to the city, to appreciate its beautiful architecture, rich culture, impressive gardens and delicious food. Challenges sometimes arise when we least expect them. This guide will be your companion for those moments when life gets intense, when you need extra inspiration or when you are feeling stuck. With this book you are giving yourself an opportunity to re-center, to remind yourself of your own goals and priorities. One of the most important journeys that you will undertake during your stay in the City of Lights is that of self-understanding and awareness. Consider Happy Healthy & Zen as the first step, one that will give you tools and resources to carry on and add value to your life both during and beyond your time in Paris. To get the most out of this guide I encourage you to do the exercises and take notes as you read along. This is a great way to practice being proactive in your own health and happiness. 19
