Mission & Impact Statements Mission The Junior League of Murfreesboro is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. Background The Junior League of Murfreesboro is a volunteer organization of women located in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Our goal is to build a better community by promoting voluntarism, identifying the needs of our community, and helping to meet those needs by providing trained volunteers, education, and financial assistance. We continually explore the needs of our community, concentrating on our focus areas: Women and Children at Risk, Educational Disadvantage, Health, Voluntarism and Quality of Life. As specific needs of the community are identified, if there are existing programs aimed at meeting those needs we collaborate with other agencies or charitable organizations by providing trained volunteers and financial assistance; if there are no existing programs, we endeavor to establish or expand upon programs aimed at meeting those needs. Since it was founded in 1992, the Junior League of Murfreesboro has provided volunteer service to over 20 agencies and programs and has founded numerous community projects, including the Kindergarten Art Supplies Project, OneTwoOne Mentoring, the Baby Love Immunization Project, and our two current programs: Kids in the Kitchen and the Womens Day Fair. We are a member of the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. There are 292 Junior Leagues throughout the Unites States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain with a collective membership of almost 200,000 women. Needs JLM's Most Pressing Needs:(1) Additional training for volunteers. Training volunteers and placing them in service is one of JLM's primary goals. If an additional $5,000.00 were available to JLM, we could obtain professional services for specialized training and allow more members to participate in training opportunities.with AJLI, our nationwide affiliate organization. (2) Additional funding for our programs, Kids in the Kitchen and EmpowHER for Life. Current funding restricts the scope and size of these valuable programs. With an additional $5,000, we could significantly expand each of these programs to make a more significant impact in our community. (3) To streamline fund-raising efforts and expand Hollyday Marketplace, our most profitable fundraising event.(4) To grow and improve our Fund Development committee. Sponsorships are crucial to the future of our League and allow us to properly budget for services, programs and events throughout our fiscal year.(5) Part-time employee to manage our website and perform accounting duties. An effective website is crucial to the management and future of JLM. Having information readily accessible on the website will allow members and the community to be better informed about our League and the programs/services we offer. Service Categories Primary Organization Category Community Improvement, Capacity Building / Women's Service Clubs Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Rutherford Board Chair Statement The Junior League of Murfreesboro impacts the community through a broad scope of volunteer and financial support. The League provides volunteer hours and funding to its many projects, programs, and community 2

agencies. Our focus is on the development of the potential of our members and improving the community through action and leadership of trained volunteers. Our successes are many. JLM is involved in many different programs that will have a positive impact on our community over the long term. Our Kids in the Kitchen program focuses on teaching healthy eating habits to youth in our community, in an effort to help reverse the epidemic of childhood obesity. Other programs we are involved in have a more immediate reward, such as our Womens Day Fair. One event we do in particular is called the Women s Day Fair. This is an all day service event focused on women in need. There are many educational opportunities for women and children. It is amazing to see how a one day event can make such a difference in some of these women s lives. They leave feeling more confident about themselves. Our volunteers provide coats, books, different community agencies services, and even provide haircuts for participants. It is so heartwarming to see these women leave this event with the biggest smiles on their faces. The current challenge our organization faces is developing our niche in the Murfreesboro community. Our organization supports many non-profits and their causes in the community. However, JLM would like to identify one significant and specific need which is not being met in Murfreesboro. We would like to focus upon meeting this need. We would develop a plan to address the issue. From there, we would educate, volunteer, and raise funds to support the identified cause. The community sees our organization as one which supports so many causes. This is definitely positive. However, we want to identify an unsupported need and work towards eliminating this issue; our goal is to establisht the building blocks for addressing this issue over a three year commitment, and work towards leaving a legacy where what we help to build can be sustained over the long term. This year we are allowing our members to submit a need they have identified as being under-served in our community. Our league will vote on the issue they find most dear to their heart. We will have a one year implementation phase. From there, we will commit to supporting this issue through volunteer work and fundraising dollars. 3

Programs Programs Kids in the Kitchen Description The goal of the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen initiative, which is supported by The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc (AJLI), is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. Children ages 6-17, as well as their parents, are educated about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices by hands-on participation in the preparation of healthy meals. Since the inception of the program in 2006, the Junior League of Murfreesboro has continually expanded their collaborative efforts and has partnered with the City of Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation, Rutherford County Health Dept, Murfreesboro City Schools, United Way, UT Extension Office, Boys and Girls Club, and the Murfreesboro Housing Authority. The AJLI provides guidelines and materials to suppor the success of these education and motiviational activities.
