Representing the Up Baby Project CIC REPRESENTING UP FEBRUARY 2016 1

Introduction We would like to thank you for considering representing The Up Project at an upcoming event. Without your help we would not be able to support the families that we do. We would like to tell you a bit about The Up Project and what your role will be. Your Role Your role will be representing The Up Project. As such, we expect you to exemplify our values and honour our commitments which are detailed later in this document. It is very important that you work within any guidelines and requirements of the event organisers. Also, please be respectful of other companies and organisations who are present at the event. They have usually spent a lot of money to be at the event, and we, quite simply, have not! We will let you know if there are any specific aims for the event you are attending. If not, you are simply there to let people know about The Up Project, what we do and how they can support us. You will answer people s questions. If allowed by the event organisers, you will also be asking manufacturers, retailers and other organisers at the event for donated carriers. About The Up Project Our Values Tailored Information Recognising that no two families are the same and offering an individual approach to enable families to make their own informed decisions about how to carry their child. Taking into account any limitations and adaptations needed. Informed decisions Ensuring that any information provided respects medical advice and input provided for the families by their healthcare team and where needed working in liaison with any professionals involved in the care of members of the family. Inclusive We are a diverse and inclusive organisation and will not discriminate on any unlawful grounds in our work with partners, staff and families. Accessible We aim to provide easy access to our services in a number of different ways and we have a clear accessibility policy. Safe We value the safety of our clients, their children and our staff highly. All staff receive Safeguarding and Data Protection training, we also have safeguarding and data protection policies. In addition we work from the basis of safe babywearing and all information regarding carrying is provided by trained and insured professionals. REPRESENTING UP FEBRUARY 2016 2

Our Commitment to Responsible Fundraising We are committed to high standards We do all we can to ensure that fundraisers, volunteers and fundraising contractors working with us to raise funds, comply with this commitment We comply with the law including those that apply to data protection, health and safety and the environment We are honest and open We tell the truth and do not exaggerate We do what we say we are going to do We answer all reasonable questions about our fundraising activities and costs We are clear We are clear about who we are, what we do and how your gift is used Where we have a promotional agreement with a commercial company, we make clear how much of the purchase price we receive We give a clear explanation of how you can make a gift and amend a regular commitment We are respectful We respect the rights, dignities and privacy of our supporters and beneficiaries We will not put undue pressure on you to make a gift and if you do not want to give or wish to cease giving, we will respect your decision If you tell us that you don t want us to contact you in a particular way we will not do so We do not pressure anyone to donate to us We are fair and reasonable We take care not to use any images or words that cause unjustifiable distress or offence We take care not to cause unreasonable nuisance or disruption We are accountable If you are unhappy with anything we ve done whilst fundraising, you can contact us to make a complaint. We have a complaints procedure, a copy of which is available on request. If we cannot resolve your complaint, we accept the authority of the Fundraising Standards Board to make a final adjudication. REPRESENTING UP FEBRUARY 2016 3

Frequently Asked Questions What is your name? We are The Up Baby Project (CIC). CIC stands for community interest company. We are usually known as simply The Up Project. When did The Up Project start? The Up Project started in October 2014 and became incorporated as The Up Baby Project CIC in January 2015. How are you set up? Are you a charity? We are a community interest company (often called a CIC). We are not a charity. A CIC is a special type of limited company which exists to benefit the community rather than private shareholders. It has strict rules we need to follow to ensure that what we does benefits the community. We chose for The Up Project to become a CIC rather than a charity for two main reasons. Firstly because a charity has strict rules on how often decision makers need to meet in person and each of the five directors are based around the UK and we do not think it a good use of our limited funds to travel to have in person meetings. The majority of our decision making is done online. Secondly, when we started we did not have enough funds to apply to be a charity! We will periodically review our structure and it may change in the future if we deem it beneficial. How do you decide which families to help? We help disadvantaged families throughout the UK to carry their children. We do this by giving free baby carriers and the knowledge needed to use them comfortably and safely to disadvantaged families across the UK. It is very important to us that we have clear and easily accessible criteria for who we help. These are the categories of people we help: Disability (affecting a child or adult in the family) OR Serious illness (affecting a child or adult in the family) OR Postnatal depression and bonding issues (past or present) OR Domestic abuse (past or present) OR Poverty or low income (household income under 16,000 after deducting housing costs) We will also consider applications from any family which is facing other circumstances (temporary or permanent) that means a baby carrier will help a child feel more attached to their carer, improve the families ability to be a part of their local community or reduce exposure to physical harm and emotionally volatile situations. A client family only needs to fall into a minimum of ONE of the above categories. REPRESENTING UP FEBRUARY 2016 4

What help do you offer families? We offer several different services and each eligible family receives a tailor made plan made up from one or more of the following services: A baby carrier or sling Adapted instructions A face to face private consultation An email private consultation Sign posting to other appropriate local sling advice services Which countries do you work in? We help people who live in any of the following countries: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and The Isle of Man. What are your long term goals? We aim to be able to help disadvantaged families no matter where in the UK they are. Although we are a new organisation we very much want to be a service that is around in years to come. We plan to apply for long term grants during 2016 which will mean we can continue to help families long term. Can I have some leaflets? Please give around ten leaflets out on the day to each person who asks. Then take down their name, address, how many leaflets they would like and how they will use the leaflets. We will then send out the leaflets within a week of the end of the event. Are the people who work for The Up Project paid? Yes, Three of the five directors are paid the national living wage for the hours they work. Our consultants are paid reasonable childcare and travel expenses for the work they do for us. We also have many non-paid volunteers including 2 of our directors. What are the credentials of the directors of The Up Project? The five directors of The Up Project are Anne McEwan, Kerry Ellis, Sarah Condry, Suzanne Pearson and Renee Jeffery. All have advanced DBS (formally known as CRB) checks completed, are members of the British Association of Babywearing Instructors (BABI), have completed extensive child safeguarding and data protection training and are fully insured and qualified as babywearing/carrying consultants. They each have different qualities and experiences. You can find out more about each director on our website What are the credentials of the people working directly with The Up Project s clients? Each person working directly with our clients has an advanced DBS (formally known as CRB) check completed, has completed at least NVQ2 level child safeguarding and data protection training and our own internal training whatever their role. Up Project Partner Consultants are those that work with our clients on a one to one basis and are all fully insured and qualified as babywearing/carrying consultants. They have at least six months experience of working as carrying consultants, most have significantly more than this. Many have other complimentary roles in the babywearing community and their local communities. REPRESENTING UP FEBRUARY 2016 5
