Hillsboro Middle School/Hillsboro High School 550 US 62 South Hillsboro, Ohio 45133 937-393-9877/ 937-393-3485 Jason Snively, HS Principal Kathy Hoop, MS Principal Laura Johnson, District School Nurse Dear Parent/Guardian, Beginning in the fall of 2016-2017 school year, the Ohio Department of Health has mandated that ALL entering 7 th grade and 12 th grade students MUST show evidence of receiving the meningococcal vaccine in order to be able to attend school. For those 12 th grade students who have already received 1 dose of the vaccine, a second dose is required unless he/she was over 16 years of age when it was given. Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial illness. It is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in children 2 through 18 years of age in the United States. Meningitis is an infection of the covering of the brain and the spinal cord. Meningococcal disease also causes blood infections. About 1,000-1,200 people get meningococcal disease each year in the U.S. Even when they are treated with antibiotics, 10-15% of these people die. Of those who live, another 11%-19% lose their arms or legs, have problems with their nervous systems, become deaf or mentally retarded, or suffer seizures of strokes. Anyone can get meningococcal disease, but it is most common in infants less than 1 year old and people 16-21 years of age. Children with certain medical conditions, such as lack of a spleen, have an increased risk of getting meningococcal disease. College freshman living in dorms are also at risk. This is why preventing the disease through use of meningococcal vaccine is important for people at highest risk. 2 doses of the meningococcal vaccine (MCV4) are recommended for adolescents 11 through 18 years of age: the first dose at 11 or 12 years of age, with a booster at age 16. If the first dose is given between 13 and 15 years of age, the booster should be given between 16 and 18. If the first dose is given after the 16 th birthday, a booster is not needed. The Highland County Health Department will be offering an immunization clinic for all current 6 th grade students to receive the required meningococcal disease, as well as the Tdap vaccine which is also required for 7 th grade. All current 11 th grade students will also be included in this clinic to be offered the meningococcal vaccine only. This clinic will be on Thursday, April 14, 2016. The cost will be $ 5.00 per shot. I would highly suggest that you take advantage of this immunization clinic so that you don t forget about this new requirement over the summer. Your child WILL NOT be able to attend school in the fall without proof that the required shot/s have been received. Please feel free to call me with any questions at 937-393-4421 at the MS/HS clinic. For more detailed information, you may want to consult your child s primary care provider. Sincerely, Laura Johnson, BSN, RN, LSN District School Nurse

Dear Parent/Guardian There are new immunization requirements for students that are entering the 7 th grade AND those entering the 12 th grade. Another vaccine that is recommended, but not required, is the HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine known as Gardasil. Gardasil is recommended for both girls and boys, and is a three dose series. The Gardasil vaccine will not be available at the school-based clinic, but may be obtained at the Highland County Health Department during one of the regularly scheduled clinics. For more information you may contact the Highland County Health Department at 937-393-1941 or your health care provider.
