Top Tips Caring for your Puppy Small Dog 2-10kg, Medium Dog 11-25kg, Large Dog 26kg+ Dogs digestive systems differ from ours, so dogs need a diet formulated especially for their needs. You should try to feed your dog at the same time each day. If possible it is better to feed your adult dog in two feeds per day rather than just one, especially for large breeds. There are certain foods which can be toxic to dogs, including chocolate (unless specifically formulated for dogs) and onions. You should be aware of what foods can be harmful to your dog. Make sure your dog gets sufficient exercise. This is a great way to bond with your dog while maintaining their health. Be vigilant with the amount of food you give your dog. The tips and information in this booklet are just guidelines. All dogs are individuals and may have individual needs. Puppies can be introduced to solid food from about 4 weeks of age. At this stage you will need to add some warm (not boiling) water to the kibbles to get a porridge-like consistency. Feed like this up to 6/7 weeks of age. In the event of changing a puppy s diet make sure to do so gradually, introducing the new food over a 1-2 week period, so as not to upset their sensitive digestive system. Puppies need to be fed regularly. For the first few months they should be fed 4 5 small meals daily. A puppy s tummy is very small. As your puppy matures, the frequency of feeds can be reduced until reaching adulthood, at which stage feeding twice daily is recommended. Remember different breeds mature at different ages. A small breed (e.g. Pug) may reach mature body size as early as 9 months, whereas a giant breed (e.g. St Bernard) will still be growing up to two years of age. Make sure your puppy gets all the necessary vaccinations from your vet. Also ensure that your puppy is wormed regularly. After exercising, place your puppy in another room for an hour or so. The puppy gets used to being left alone and this may help to prevent anxiety, which can often lead to excessive barking and chewing.
