ESPEN Congress Copenhagen 2016 SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND INTEREST IN NUTRITION DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO COMMIT YOUNG PEOPLE: NORDIC NUTRITION ACADEMY, ESPEN COURSES, LLL T. Cederholm (SE)

Different approaches to commit young people into nutrition research Tommy Cederholm Professor, Clinical Nutrition & Metabolism, Uppsala University MD, Senior consultant, Dept of Geriatric Medicine, Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden Officer - Treasurer, ESPEN, European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism

Learning objective To learn about examples of how to engage young potential nutrition researchers into research To think about how interest for and knowledge about nutrition could be implemented in young health professionals

How do we attract young researchers into the field of clinical nutrition? We see the problem when we have the solution To improve clinical outcome by improving nutrition care is a low hanging apple in todays clinical context when drug development to improve outcome marginally draw enourmous costs. The million dollar questions: - What hampers young professionals interest for mutrition? - What is needed to facilitate the nutrition interest from young professionals?

Examples of educational programmes to attract young potential researchers of clinical nutrition The Nordic Nutritition Academy 2004-2006 2009-2011 ending at ESPEN Congress Gothenburg 2014-2016 ending at ESPEN Congress Copenhagen ESPEN Courses of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Focus on former Eastern European Countries LLL Life Long Learning Program Global focus Pre-GLL Pre-Graduate education focus on Medical University Curricula

The Nordic Nutrition Academy Six 3-day residential programs (Wednesday lunch Friday lunch) over a period of two years. Alternating between the Nordic countries. 2004-2006 (ESPEN Congress Istanbul) 2009-2011 ending at ESPEN Congress Gothenburg 2014-2016 ending at ESPEN Congress Copenhagen English is the professional language

The Nordic Nutrition Academy Collaboration in nutrition National PEN-societies SWESPEN, DSKE, NSKE, Fispen Context and knowledge Universities Karolinska Institutet, Sahlgrenska Academy, Program, knowledge, teachers, expenses for travels and time Industry Nestlé, Baxter, Fresenius-Kabi Logistics, lodging expenses

The Nordic Nutrition Academy Open application 25 young health/nutrition professionals in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden Not necessarily yet active in research A mix of physicians-dietitians-nurses 9 mentors: Leadership by Professors Jörgen Larsson, Karolinska Institutet, and Ingvar Bosaeus, Sahlgrenska, Gothenburg A mix of high-profiled scientists Henrik Höjgaard-Rasmussen, Öivind Irtum, Jens Kondrup, Ann Ödlund-Olin, Mette Holst, Elisabet Rothenberg, Jan Wernerman, Anne-Marie Beck, Tommy Cederholm, Folke Hammarqvist, Lars Ellegård as teachers and role-models.

The Nordic Nutrition Academy - objectives Basic nutrition knowledge - themes Scientific methods Leadership training Project work 4 groups Surgery Geriatrics two abstracts on Sarcopenic obesity ICU Nursing Abstract presentation at ESPEN

The Nordic Nutrition Academy 2004-2006 (ESPEN Congress Istanbul) 1 abstract 2009-2011 ending at ESPEN Congress Gothenburg 8 abstracts 2014-2016 ending at ESPEN Congress Copenhagen 8 abstracts ~10 PhD Theses >15 on-going thesis projects Many of todays young active clinical nutrition scientists in the Nordic countries have been part of any of the NNAs

The ESPEN Course of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism Annual course one week Started as an annual Advanced course (Maastricht) 1991 Since 2011 the ESPEN Course is rotating among countries in Eastern Europe 2011 Vilnius, Lithuania 2012 Dubrovnik, Croatia 2013 Gödöllö, Hungary 2014 Hradec Kralove, Czech Republik 2015 Bucharest, Rumania 2016 Wieliczka, Poland

The Life-Long Learning (LLL) Program A major part of ESPENs Educational activities a global success! Started 12 years ago Anyone can register www.lllnutrition.org On-line courses and live courses (40.000 att.) 40 up-dated topics/3-4 modules in each State-of-the-art text, cases, questionnaires, exams.

The Life-Long Learning (LLL) Program Live courses are organized at the ESPEN Congresses (Fri and Sat) by the National PEN-societies (sometimes in collaboration with local medical nutrition industry) Each course provides CME that may be compiled to an ESPEN Diploma 60 CME on-line 40 CME live 20 CME final examination

Pre-GLLL Pre-graduate LLL 11 basic/essential topics - ~30 slides/each To be used by teachers in Medical Schools around the whole world Provided free from the LLL website

The only way to improve clinical practice is to increase knowledge by improved research Common prejudices around clinical nutrition: If nature wants you to lose weight when ill, there is a meaning in that By reduced body weight there will be less strain on the heart A couple of days without food doesn t hurt anyone Obesity is the major public health nutrition problem, thus to lose a couple of pounds when at hospital is only good for you Effectiveness and efficacy of nutritional therapy - A cochrane systematic review. Muscaritoli M, Krznarić Z, Barazzoni R, Cederholm T, Golay A, Van Gossum A, Kennedy N, Kreimann G, Laviano A, Pavić T, Schneider SM, Singer P. Clin Nutr 2016 Epub ahead of print.

Take-home messages and Q:s on how to improve recruitment? Attract the best young talents by providing good education concepts and occasions Introduce Nutrition early in the medical/nursing curricula Nordic Nutrition Academy, ESPEN Annual Courses, the LLL continuous education program (on-line and live) are examples of successful initiatives Complement the graduate curricula with the Pre G-LLL material Which are the hidden keys or where are the hidden gems to attract young professionals into nutrition (practice and research)?
