Twin Rivers Artists Association <admin@traanc.org> 2019 TRAA Newsletter 1/22/2019 2:26 PM To Mary Phelps <phelpsml@cox.net> Time to renew your TRAA Membership The cost is $35.00. You have three choices. You may renew online, print out the membership form and send your check to Joyce Alexander, or you can renew at our monthly meetings. Twin Rivers Artists Association January 2019 Newsletter Letter from the President So many new ideas have been shared by the membership to me, for which I am grateful. Still, suddenly here we are, into 2019 and I am a bit shell shocked it all rests on my doorstep now, and Mimi can now come and go as she pleases! LOL

My theme for our Association this coming year is Participation Is Rewarding. The goal is to provide many new, exciting, and informative opportunities for members to get discounts, attend closed workshops, participate in fun excursions and receive far more than the membership dues ever did before. The reason is quite simple. More BANG for the buck, more incentive to stay active within the group, and therefore become more an association that knows its members, rather than just being faces you recognize without knowing who half of them are. To begin, we are working jointly with Craven Community College, thanks to our member Georgia Johnson s tip, to facilitate a day trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art to attend a show, visit the splendid gift shop, and for the first time, see the behind the scenes operations of the conservation and framing operations of our great art institution. The trip is being planned for April, and will involve a bus, a wonderful luncheon, and a very special discount for the whole day s event ONLY for members. Others may also join, but will not get the discount. I also plan to have a private screening of the award winning movie Mr. Turner about the British artist J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) who was light years ahead of any artist fo his time. Nominated for 4 Academy Awards, it is breath taking in its cinematography. The event will be in groups of 6-8 at my house, and ONLY open to members who would love to see this. Naturally, popcorn and beverages will be nominally priced for attendees. LOL We shall also be having an invitational reception for world famous author and artist Mr. Tony Couch in March. This will be a chance for you to meet and Tony and get an autograph of his book or buy a copy since he publishes it as well. His book Watercolor, You Can Do It is the largest selling book on watercolor ever, with over a million copies sold to date. Also, a workshop with a renowned oil/watercolor portrait artist, discounted for members only.

Our first meeting will be on February 6 at 7 PM, so I hope you will all be there to learn of all the great events to come in 2019. Your participation will give rewards you never imagined. See you then. Ed TRAA Membership 2019 It is time for membership renewals. The cost is $35.00. You have three choices. You may renew on line, print out the membership form and send your check to Joyce Alexander, or you can renew at our monthly meetings. Options are good!!! HNY Holiday Party Many thanks to Betty Knapp for hosting our Holiday Party. Everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship.

February Meeting February is for touring a gallery! The artists in Community Artists Gallery & Studios are excited to show members of TRAA their beautiful new space. A wonderful variety of artists are members of this co-op, including 2-D art, baskets, jewelry, glass, pottery and woodworking. Our first meeting of the year, on February 6, will be held at the Bank of the Arts, as usual. But then we will mosey on down the block to 309 Middle Street for a great evening art tour! The 2019 Program Schedule Our monthly meeting schedule for 2019 is brim-full of exciting programs. There are three excursions and four hand-on demonstrations. On February 6, after our normal business meeting, we will be treated to a tour of the Community Artists Gallery, a short walk from our meeting place of the Bank of the Arts, on Middle Street. For March 6 we plan a hands-on exploration of paper art. Our April meeting, on the third, will feature another hands-on session, an introduction to print-making. The first of May takes us to Wine and Design a field trip combined with hands-on art making! On June fifth we will have a discussion of reproducing our artwork. For July third we will visit Shop Class, and tour a facility that provides top-shelf tools and instruction for do-it-yourselfers. After July, the next meeting will be held in September. Bring your artwork to the library! Our annual meeting is scheduled for October 2, and our final program of the year is yet another hands-on: exploring intriguing Fossil Leaf Art." Valentine s Day Card Sale at Bank of the Arts Come see the 2019 Craven County Valentine s Day Card Sale at Bank of the Arts during January 2019, made possible by the Twin Rivers Artists Association and Craven Arts Council. Featuring hundreds of cards made by local public art students, this is the perfect opportunity to buy a loved one or friend a handmade card for February. All cards are

$3.50, and all proceeds go to Craven County art teachers for purchasing classroom art supplies. An annual event, the Craven County Valentine s Day Card sale was formerly hosted by Carolina Creations. This year the sale will take place in the Director s Gallery at Bank of the Arts for the entire month of January, with a special student reception January 8th, from 4-5:30pm. Teachers, students, and parent have all been invited to participate in the opening, along with the public. This year s sale was made possible by funding and support from the Twin Rivers Artists Association and the Craven Arts Council. The mission of both organizations supports and believes in the important of arts education, for students of all levels. The cards were created by the public school students during their arts class, and include a wide range of grades, skill levels, and techniques. Priced at $3.50 each, these affordable gifts help fund arts education in our county, by donating the proceeds to be used for the purchase of art materials and supplies.
