GPS Safety Summary Calcium sulfate Calcium sulfate Chemical identity Name Calcium sulfate Brand names REA-Gips Chemical name (IUPAC) Calcium sulfate CAS number 7778-18-9 Molecular formula CaSO4 Structure Chemical characterization Synonyms Inorganic salt Gypsum AG GPS Safety Summary January 2013 Version 2 page 1/6

Uses and application Calcium sulfate is a naturally occurring substance. It is omnipresent due to its occurrence and its many uses from industry to households. The substance has a good environmental profile and shows no harmful health effects. Due to its good safety profile it has multiple uses which include construction material, fertilizers, food and feed additive and many more. Physical/chemical properies Calcium sulfate poses no dangers by its physical or chemical properties. Property Value Physical state Inorganic white powder Density 2.96 at 20 C Melting point 1450-1570 C Flammability Not flammable Explosive properties Non explosive Self-ignition temperature No self-ignition Water solubility 2.4 g/l at 20 C and ph 7.7 Molecular weight 136.14 Health effects Calcium sulfate poses no dangers by its physical or chemical properties. Extensive testing showed no adverse health effects. Health effects Effect Assessment Acute Toxicity oral/ inhalation/ dermal Irritation/ Corrosion skin/ eye Sensitization Toxicity after repeated exposure oral/ inhalation Genotoxicity/ Mutagenicity Toxicity for reproduction Result considered acutely toxic when swallowed, inhaled or in contact with skin considered to irritate skin or eye considered to cause allergic skin reaction considered chronically toxic when swallowed or inhaled considered to cause genetic defects considered to have an impact on fertility nor to harm the unborn child AG GPS Safety Summary January 2013 Version 2 page 2/6

Environmental effects Effect Assessment Aquatic Toxicity Result Based on available data not considered harmful to aquatic life Fate and Behavior Biodegradation PBT/ vpvb conclusion Result The substance is an inorganic salt and hence no biodegradation will occur. The substance will break up into calcium and sulfate ions which are naturally found in the environment. The ions are essential to all living organisms and bioaccumulation is not expected. Extensive testing showed that Calcium sulfate poses no harmful effect on aquatic life and does not accumulate in the food chain. Exposure Calcium sulfate has to be considered as a substance that is omnipresent due to its natural occurrence and its numerous uses by the general public and a number of industries. Furthermore, plaster of Paris has been used in the immobilization of broken bones and is not known to have been associated with any toxic effects, despite intimate skin contact, for periods of the order of one month, over considerable areas of skin. Based on the health assessment Calcium sulfate does not give rise to any particular concern thus exposure is considered to be without risk. Nevertheless workers should apply standard safety measures and refer to Safety Data Sheets for further detail. Consumers should always read product information before use and follow the label/use instructions. Release into the environment can happen at any time from production site to consumer home due to the manifold uses. Further the substance is naturally occuring. The substance poses no risk to the environment and dissociates into calcium and sulfate ions. It is not expected to accumulate in the food chain. Even in the case of accidents or spills the substance does not pose a risk to the environment since it does not cause acute or chronic adverse effects in aquatic organisms up to its water solubility. Consequently, all identified uses are considered safe for the environment. AG GPS Safety Summary January 2013 Version 2 page 3/6

Risk management recommendations Hazard assessment showed no adverse effects to the human health or the environment. As a consequence there is no need to further recommend specific operational conditions. Further risk management measures for the manufacture and identified uses of the substance are not required. Nevertheless workers should always refer to the corresponding Safety Data Sheet before handling any substance. Consumer should always read product information before use and follow the label/use instructions. When using chemicals make sure that there is adequate ventilation. Always use appropriate chemical resistant gloves to protect your hands and skin and always wear eye protection such as chemical goggles. Do not eat, drink, or smoke where chemicals are handled, processed, or stored. Wash hands and skin following contact. If the substance gets into your eyes, rinse eyes thoroughly for at least 15 minutes with tap water and seek medical attention. AG GPS Safety Summary January 2013 Version 2 page 4/6
