Equipment: Tank: Agitation: Ventilation: Temp. Control Dipping Baskets: A regular steel tank lined with PVC, Koroseal, or fiberglass Air agitation is mandatory. Recommended, comply with local regulations. Teflon heaters are recommended Polypropylene baskets only. Steel or stainless steel baskets cannot be used. 2
Bath Make Up Per 100 Gallons (378.5 l): 1. Add 75 gallons (280 liters) of de-ionized water. 2. Mixing well, add 7 gallons (26.5 liters) of HyProBlack 2020 A 3. Add 7 gallons (26.5 liters) of HyProBlack 2020 B 4. Add 1 gallons (3.7 liters) of 5. Bring the volume to the final working level with de-ionized water. 6. Adjust ph with sulfuric acid if necessary Analytical Procedures: Reagents 1. Sodium hydroxide 2. 30% hydrogen peroxide 3. 1:1 sulfuric acid 4. 10% potassium iodide 5. Starch solution 6. 0.1N sodium thiosulfate Titration Procedure for HyProBlack 2020 A: 1. Pipette a 10 ml bath sample of HyProBlack 2020 A into a 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask 2. Add 100 mls de-ionized water. 3. Add 2 grams of sodium hydroxide to the flask and swirl until dissolved. 4. Add 2 mls of 30% hydrogen peroxide. 5. Boil for at least 30 minutes. (Important) 6. Cool to room temperature. 7. Filter through #41 filter paper (note: be sure to rinse all chrome through filter paper prior to proceeding). 8. Add 10 mls of 1:1 sulfuric acid. 9. Add 5 mls of 10% potassium iodide. 10.Titrate with 0.1 N standard sodium thiosulfate to a straw color which persists for 30 seconds. 11. Add 2 mls of starch solution. 12. Continue titration until the dark blue color disappears. Calculation: % HyProBlack 2020 A = mls. of sodium thiosulfate x 0.676 Titration Procedure for HyProBlack 2020 B: 1. Pipette a 25 ml bath sample of HyProBlack 2020 B into a 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask 2. Add 75 mls de-ionized water. 3. Add 4 ml concentrated sulfuric acid (8 ml of 50%) 4. Add 3-6 drops Ferroin Indicator. 5. Titrate with 0.1N Ceric Sulfate from orange-yellow to blue-green endpoint. Calculation: % HyProBlack 2020 B = mls 0.1N Ceric Sulfate x 1.105 Analytical Procedures: Bath Analysis by AA HyProBlack 2020 A, analyzing for chromium: Calculation: % HyProBlack 2020 A = ppm Chromium X 260 3
Maintenance of the Solution: HyProBlack 2020 A & B Maintain by analysis After the initial add of, additions are only needed as the zinc metal climbs in the bath. For every 5000ppm of zinc dissolved, add 0.1% Troubleshooting Guide for HyProBlack 2020 Process: Suggestions prior to running production work- Always run simulation off line with small amount of working passivate bath. Do not use topcoat when troubleshooting. Set immersion time at 30-45 seconds. If making a new solution, start at the optimum level of Part A. Start with the low end of Part B Make-up. When adjusting ph up, use dilute caustic added slowly; never raise above 3.5. Problem Cause Correction Parts are black with some green & red iridescence- Passivate film cannot be rubbed off after drying Ideal passivate conditions None. Make similar adds to line & incorporate topcoat Passivate taking too slow Low Part A Increase Part A in 1% increments Parts are not black have rainbow color Low temperature No agitation Low Part B ph too high Raise temperature Use mild air agitation Parts have powdery look Part A too high Cut passivate Passivate film can be rubbed after drying ph too low Temperature too high Part B too high ph too low Agitation too high Increase Part B in 1 % increments Adjust with sulfuric acid to 2 2.4 Raise ph Lower Temperature Cut passivate Adjust with dilute caustic to 2 2.4 Reduce agitation 4
