Summary 1. Dietary data are far from being optimal 2. Multiple lines of evidence show that diet is an important risk factor for the health of people and planet 3. We cannot wait for perfect data in order to make decision about diet. Decisions have to be made now. 4. Methods have been developed the make the best use of current dietary data in order to characterize the human diet and inform decision making 5. New data sources and new data processing methods should be harnessed as they become available to improve and update existing dietary estimates 35
