Glen Whitley January 30, 2018 Dear Friend of the Council: We hope you can join us for the 30th Annual Jim Bradshaw Memorial Stars in Recovery Luncheon on Tuesday, May 1. Since its inception, the annual Stars in Recovery Luncheon has featured well-known and beloved celebrities speaking publicly about their struggles and triumphs over alcoholism, substance abuse and addiction. Although this year s speaker name is not as well known, Brendan McDonough s story as the lone survivor of the elite Granite Mountain Hot Shot Fire team killed in the 2014 Yarnell Wildfire has been covered in the national media, several books, documentaries and the recent big screen movie Only the Brave. Brendan s journey from heroin addict to select firefighter to PTSD survivor is one of internal strength and redemption. Attached is more information about Brendan McDonough and his incredible story. The money raised through sponsorships, ticket sales and the silent auction at the 30 th Annual Jim Bradshaw Memorial Stars in Recovery Luncheon support a significant portion of RRC s operating budget. Your support will free up program dollars to provide more direct services including screenings, assessments and outpatient services for addiction and substance abuse, counseling for veterans and their families, and prevention education for at risk children and youth. Whether you participate as a sponsor, purchase a table for your business or friends, or donate a product or service to our Silent Auction, partnering with Recovery Resource Council puts your name in front of 800 of Fort Worth s key business leaders and philanthropists who attend our luncheon. Please review the attached menu of opportunities available. 30th Annual Jim Bradshaw Memorial Stars in Recovery Luncheon Brendan McDonough Journey to Sobriety in a Time of Epidemic ' Brendan McDonough's journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. A heroin addict with a daughter on the way, McDonough was facing a bleak future. After recovering from that addiction, he was given a chance to com pletely change his life and serve a higher purpose as a member of an elite squad of firefighters. Through painstaking work, unshakeable faith, and devotion to his new family, Brendan became an invaluable member of the "Granite Mountain Hotshots. After surviving the Yarnell Hill Wildfire and an unfathomable loss of 19 of his fellow firefighters in 2013, Brendan McDonough suffered from bouts of deep depression and intractable Post-Traumatic Stress. But the family who needed him, his faith in God, and the memory of his brothers' sacrifice inspired him to keep living through his darkest moments and pushed him to begin helping others. McDonough's story of struggle and redemption leaves audiences uplifted, encouraging them to become their best selves and to seek out support when struggling. Brendan s story, and that of the Granite Mountain Hotshots was featured in the movie Only the Brave. Released in October 2017, the film was directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Josh Brolin, Jeff Bridges, and Jennifer Connelly. McDonough is portrayed by Miles Teller.
