Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma Module 1

Hypnosis Dispelling some of the Myths Myth: You can be hypnotised to do things against your will The hypnotherapist is merely a guide or facilitator. He/she cannot "make" you do anything against your will. This is a commonly held idea that has its source in stage shows and films that capitalize on the power of the hypnotist.

Hypnosis Dispelling some of the Myths Myth: A person under hypnosis is asleep or unconscious. Whilst the hypnotic state might resemble sleep from the physical point of view: slowed breathing, eyes closed, muscles relaxed, activity decreased. From the mental standpoint the customer is generally relaxed and may be keenly alert, in a comfortable state where the person can think, talk and even move about if needed. But all customers are unique and can experience hypnosis in their own unique ways.

Hypnosis Dispelling some of the Myths Myth: I can t be hypnotised. The truth is that everyone can be hypnotised. As a matter of fact, each one of us is using hypnosis in some form every single day of our lives either consciously or unconsciously. We are experiencing some form of a trance-like hypnotic state each time we engage our imagination, each time our attention is focused. Strength of mind really has little to do with it. Hypnosis helps a person gain greater control over both mind and body, it can help a person develop a stronger mind.

Hypnosis Dispelling some of the Myths Myth: A person can get stuck in a trance forever. No one has ever been stuck in a hypnotic trance. Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state that we enter and exit during the normal course of a day.

Hypnosis Dispelling some of the Myths Myth: I won't remember anything the hypnotist says. Everyone experiences hypnosis differently... for some it's a state in which you are focused on the hypnotist s words and listening more carefully, for others it's a little more like day dreaming and your attention may drift and wander from one thought to another... sometimes not paying any conscious attention to what the hypnotist is saying. Either way is okay, and neither will be more or less effective than the other. It's simply a matter of your own personal style.

Hypnosis What it is. Hypnosis is a natural state of selective, focused attention, and, even though it is 100% natural and normal, it remains one of the most fascinating phenomena of the human mind. Our ability to enter this unique state of consciousness opens the door to countless possibilities for healing, and positive change. When we enter into the absorbed state of hypnosis, we can use our thoughts, talents and experiences in ways not usually available to us. We can develop the abilities that enable desired changes in our thoughts, feelings and behaviours to be possible.

Hypnotherapy What it is. Hypnotherapy combines proven therapeutic approaches with the benefits of hypnosis. This means that people are not treated with hypnosis but are treated in hypnosis In hypnosis, the imagination rather than the intellect is active. And it is through our imagination that we have our greatest power to learn new more beneficial behaviours

Hypnotherapy What it is. Hypnotherapy can be used to bring relief to existing conditions, change unwanted beliefs and behaviour, or enhance existing talents and potentials. The list of situations where it can aid the individual is endless and it is particularly effective for those who wish to gain greater control - or perhaps regain control - of some aspect of their life. It is a brief intervention therapy. When administered by a professionally trained and skilled Hypnotherapist the benefits are long lasting and often permanent. It is often successful when other, more conventional methods of treatment have failed. The British Medical Association approved hypnotherapy as a valid medical treatment in 1955

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy What it is. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses practical, modern, and well-researched strategies such as brain based explanations, solution focused, NLP and CBT techniques to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time. With Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we look at what the customer wants to achieve (the solution) rather than at whatever prompted them to visit us (the problem).

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy What it is. The approach focuses on the present and future and not on the past. The Hypnotherapist asks the customer to consider their preferred future, for instance, what would be better if the problem had improved? What would have changed? This enables the customer s possible solutions to become more obvious and gives the customer a goal to work towards.

How the Mind Works The Intellectual Mind The Left Prefrontal Cortex (The Boss) The bit that you know as you. The Conscious part. Interacts with the world. When in this part we come up with proper assessments of situation Generally positive Get things right Attached to a vast intellectual resource.

How the Mind Works The Intellectual Mind The Cerebral Cortex (The Resource Library) The Prefrontal Cortex is supported by a huge library of information a bit like a computer database. The Intellectual Mind is the bit that we don t share with animals.

How the Mind Works The Subconscious Mind The Primitive Mind Part of the limbic system which runs all the automatic systems of the body heart beating, lungs pumping etc. There for our safety our survival it s quick, very quick. It has to be. But it s negative and cannot think for itself - it works on patterns of behaviour.

How the Mind Works The Subconscious Mind Amygdala: (The Guard) Fight/Flight/Freeze (Depression) Constantly alert to the needs of basic survival. Emotional reactions.

How the Mind Works The Subconscious Mind Hippocampus: holds our primitive response patterns and sometimes inappropriate behavioural experience and patterns.

How the Mind Works The Subconscious Mind Hypothalamus: regulates chemical responses in the body and mind.

The Stress Bucket

How the Mind Works We need to take the emotional negativity away from the events of the day and empty the stress bucket moving the events of the day from the hippocampus up into the library

The Stress Bucket Empty the Stress Bucket during Rapid Eye Movement sleep

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep At night we re-run the events of the day and change them from being an emotional memory to a narrative memory. We move the event from the primitive mind to the intellectual mind (in the library).

The Stress Bucket How we deal with anything on any particular day is dependent on the level of stress in our bucket.
