PERIODICALS The library subscribes to several periodicals in herbal medicine. The term periodical refers to journals, newsletters, reviews, or any other material that is published periodically throughout the year. Periodicals contain information such as review articles, original research, and news from the scientific community. Journal articles can be found by searching in one of the indexes available at our library. IPA International Pharmaceutical Abstracts Updated: monthly (1970-current) Worldwide coverage of pharmaceutical science, including information on legislation and regulation of pharmaceuticals and patient counseling. Medline Updated: weekly (1966-current) Indexes and abstracts all of the major medical literature. Micromedex Updated: monthly Provides drug information for the pharmacist. Longwood Herbal Task Force (http://www.longwoodherbal.org) Produced by an interdisciplinary tean of health care professionals. Evidence based monographs, patient and clinician handouts are available. Medicinal Herb Garden (http://www.nnlm.nlm.nih.gov/pnr/uwmhg/) The site consists mostly of photographs of the various medicinal plants indexed by botanical and common names with links to further information about its range and medicinal uses. Organizations American Herbalists Guild (http://www.americanherbalistsguild.com/) A non-profit, educational organization which represents the goals and voices of herbalists. It is the only peer-review organization for professional herbalists specializing in the medicinal use of plants. Government Agencies Ethnobot Database (http://www.ars-grin.gov/duke/ethnobot.html) Provided by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture. The database contains 80,000 records of plant uses world-wide. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (http://nccam.nih.gov) A great source of scientifically based information on CAM, produced by one of the centers of the National Institutes of Health. Includes publications, information for researches, FAQs, and links to other CAM-related websites. Provides access to such databases as CAM on PubMed and the Combined Health Information atabase (CHID), a reference source of patient education materials.
