Mohamed Adel KHEDER President of e Tunisian Society of Nephrology MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE PAN-ARAB HYPERTENSION SOCIETY he Pan-Arab Hypertension Society (PAHS) is privileged to organize its fif scientific meeting in e beautiful Tunis. The meeting will be e Tlargest scientific event in e field of hypertension in e Arab World. Over e past decade epidemiologic surveys from a number of Arab Countries showed at hypertension is a major heal problem in is part of e world. More an one quarter of e adult population suffer from high blood pressure. More alarming are e low awareness, treatment and control rates of hypertension. The PAHS has a number of responsibilities in e face of is regional problem which is undoubtedly responsible for e rising rate of cardiovascular mortality and e current epidemic of aerosclerotic cardiovascular disease in many Arab countries. Through collaborative effort and exchange of information, some clues might be reached regarding e possible factors behind e high prevalence rates of hypertension. Genetic and population studies should be encouraged. Surveys about e role of obesity, salt intake, noise and environmental pollution, water hardness, oer dietary factors, social and economic stresses in relation to hypertension is urgently required. On e oer hand, national campaigns to increase public awareness and e importance of routine checking blood pressure are needed. Last year, e Egyptian Hypertension Society produced e guidelines for management of hypertension in Egypt and developing countries. Because of differences in socioeconomic status, high prevalence rates of poverty and illiteracy and limited heal insurance system, it is not expected at hypertension guidelines generated by rich industrial countries will match and be applicable in economically disadvantaged communities. For e first time, e Egyptian Hypertension Society guidelines made a difference between e optimal and minimal care in e management of hypertension. The Tunis meeting of PAHS will provide an excellent opportunity for exchange of information and development of new ideas at help us in e management of our hypertensive patients and e possible prevention of is serious disorder.
On behalf of e PAHS, I invite all interested physicians and scientists from Arab countries and oer parts of e world to come to Tunis and share eir views and scientific information wi eir colleagues. Beside e scientific event, Tunis is known for its hospitality and touristic attractions. I am sure at our PAHS meeting will be a big success at social, cultural and scientific levels.
