What is Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy? (ESWT) Extracorporeal Radial shockwaves are high-energy acoustic waves. They are transmitted through the surface of the skin and spread radially into the body. The body responds with increased metabolic activity around the painful treated site. This stimulates and accelerates the healing process.

How it works? Bullet Projectile travelling at 80 90 kph within handle. Kinetic Energy from the collision of projectile and applicator head transfers into tissue via conductive silicone gel. Energy (Shockwave) moves in a radial pattern through the skin to the target tissue to a depth of 2cm. The shockwave creates a tissue effect.

Tissue effect Shockwaves creates cavitation bubbles within tissue. Cavitation bubbles have less pressure than surrounding liquid so they implode. This implosion creates a small jet stream within tissue. The jet stream agitation separates fibrous tissue and allows the return of blood flow to the site to encourage healing.

Analgesic effect Why is there an analgesic effect on the tissue? The shockwaves bombard the C nerve fibres. The C nerves fibres releases a Substance P when activated. Substance P is responsible for communicating pain. With the onset of shockwaves the Substance P is depleted over the course of the treatment. With the depletion of substance P the nerves are no longer able to communicate pain. This pain relief can last up to six weeks. After first 500 impulses/shocks, patient will feel no or less pain, increase the intensity of the shockwaves by increasing the Air Pressure (2-4 Bar)and Frequency (4-2Hz)

Calcification of Rotator Cuff 12 weeks after treatment scan shows calcification has disappeared Weekly treatments 3-5 sessions
