ESMAHAN RAZAVI ESMAHAN campaign platform The right choice for ward 6 RAZAVI The right choice for ward 6 campaign platform

ABOUT ESMAHAN RAZAVI Since the beginning of the downturn I noticed Calgarians becoming frustrated that their concerns were not being listened to by City Hall. This is why I decided to use my passion for public service and proven abilities as a community leader to represent the constituents of Ward 6 as your next City Councillor. I am an entrepreneur who owns her own mediation firm specializing in civil, corporate and family disputes. I regularly rise to the challenge of building trust in situations where tensions are high and trust is low - a skill I know will be used at City Council. I have volunteered with the Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary and served on the board for Peer Mediation and Skills Training Community Mediation Calgary. I am the national chair for women in politics for the Business and Professional Women of Canada and am a founding member of two non-profits, Ahlain, a resource for newcomers to Canada, and Ask Her, a group dedicated to increasing the number of women running for Calgary City Council. I studied Philosophy at the University of Toronto, possess the professional designation of Qualified Mediator from the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Canada and am the loving owner of a Mia, a six year old Pomeranian. I have been a resident of Ward 6 for almost seven years. page 2 - esmahanrazavi.ca

platform introduction Calgary is a city that draws people from all over the province, country and world. It is a city like no other - where prosperity comes to those who work hard and where an entrepreneurial spirit breeds innovation and collaboration. We come together at a turning point in our history; we have been grappling with economic hardship that has touched all of us. Calgary s unemployment rate is still the highest of any major Canadian city. Our downtown is still full of empty office buildings. Our future feels uncertain. As a resident of Ward 6, you face an important choice on October 16th, 2017. This election will determine how we choose to forge a path ahead for our ward and for our city. The vision that I offer for our ward and our city is built on the optimism and hope that is quintessential to being Calgarian. After all, Calgary is at its best and most successful when it looks to the future with hope, a desire for innovation and the belief that we are and will continue to be a vibrant land of opportunity. This platform is the result of months of engagement. I have been door knocking, attending community association meetings and talking with stakeholders. Most importantly, I have been listening. This platform is as much yours as it is mine. page 3 - esmahanrazavi.ca

ESMAHAN'S FOUR DECISION MAKING PRINCIPLES The following four main principles guided the creation of this platform and, when I have the privilege to serve you as your councillor, I will use them as a test when making decisions: 1. Involve everyone I am committed to listening. The best decisions are made when everyone is given the opportunity to be heard. You must be able to share your ideas in a meaningful way in order to build the best possible future for all of us. As your Ward 6 Councillor, I will constantly strive to have as many stakeholders at the table as possible. 2. Build on strengths As Calgarians, we know that we live in the best city in the world. We are a city with an endless amount of positive attributes - we have the mountains in our backyard, we have a culture that promotes entrepreneurship and we stand together, come hell or high water. I will work to ensure we continue to identify our strengths and determine how we can use what we already have to invest in our future. page 4 - esmahanrazavi.ca

ESMAHAN'S FOUR DECISION MAKING PRINCIPLES 3. Lead and be willing to resolve conflict As a mediator, I know that collaborative leadership leads to the best results. I will bring this unique skillset to the job as your Ward 6 Councillor. I am committed to working to identify common goals and look at our differences as opportunities for improvement rather than insurmountable challenges. 4. Return on investment Calgarians work hard for every dollar that we earn. That s why, as your Ward 6 Councillor, I will fight to ensure that your tax dollars are well spent. I will work to ensure transparency and accountability are present in all aspects of decision making, so that you know that your tax dollars are being put to good use and I will be pragmatic in my approach to spending. page 5 - esmahanrazavi.ca

ESMAHAN'S FOUR PLATFORM PLANKS 1. strong economy The state of Calgary s economy is at the forefront of the minds of all Calgarians. Our unemployment rate remains the highest of any major Canadian city. Whether it is the stress of paying the property taxes on our small businesses, the anxiety of being included in the next round of layoffs, or trying to put food on the table, not one of us has emerged unscathed from the economic downturn. Ward 6 and Calgary are having a hard time which is why we need to get our economy back on track. City Council must be pragmatic and make responsible spending decisions. Council must work to re-establish Calgary as a place where businesses from Canada and around the world thrive. The world has to know that Calgary is open for business! As your Ward 6 Councillor, I will work hard to make sure Calgary competes and succeeds through encouraging innovation and advocating for a competitive business environment that draws investors from all over the world. I will fight to make our future rich with opportunity for all of us. page 6 - esmahanrazavi.ca

ESMAHAN'S FOUR PLATFORM PLANKS 2. smart development Calgary is constantly attracting new residents and as a result, our city is growing. In 2016, Ward 6 was one of six wards in the city to see an increase in its population. This growth creates opportunity for change as our ward and city adapt to the needs of our new neighbours. At the doors and at community meetings, I hear how much the residents of Ward 6 love our communities. We care about our neighbourhoods and want to make sure that they remain great places to live in. Preserving what we love about our communities while accommodating the change that comes with increased density is a balance I will work hard to achieve as your councillor. I promise to engage with Ward 6 communities meaningfully, so that your voices are not only heard but also incorporated into the plans that go forward. I will work hard to build good will between Ward 6 communities and stakeholders so that together we can create solutions that work for everyone. I am excited about the future we can all build together! page 7 - esmahanrazavi.ca

ESMAHAN'S FOUR PLATFORM PLANKS 3. safe communities Our neighbourhoods and communities serve as the building blocks of our city, province and country. The strong bonds between neighbours allow us to create communities that are welcoming, vibrant and safe. These types of communities help us build a great future together. Our communities are the places where we will grow old and where we will raise our children. They are the places we live in and for us to be able to enjoy them we have to make sure that that they are great environments for our children, our parents and ourselves. In order to create this environment our communities must be safe. Our children must be safe when crossing streets or bike around their homes. We must be able to feel safe in our homes and communities. We want to live in welcoming communities that celebrate our differences. As your councillor for Ward 6, I will work hard to keep our communities strong and vibrant by making community safety a top priority. page 8 - esmahanrazavi.ca

ESMAHAN'S FOUR PLATFORM PLANKS 4. world-class infrastructure Calgary is a world-class city. World class cities attract international investment, are key players in the global economy and provide their citizens with a high quality of living. We have to continue to invest in projects which provide taxpayers with a clear return on investment, that grow the economy and increase our overall quality of life in Calgary. For our economy to be competitive, we need to have the right infrastructure in place. We also need to maintain the infrastructure we have already invested in - like our roads, transit systems, community centres and our airport. As your Ward 6 Councillor, I will work hard to preserve Calgary s status as a world class city so that our economy is strong. But I also recognize the importance of making fiscally prudent financial decisions. That s why, as your councillor, I will balance being fiscally responsible and pragmatic with the need for investment by voting in favour of projects that provide us with a clear return on investment. page 9 - esmahanrazavi.ca

STRONG ECONOMY policies Limit property tax increases while maintaining quality services. Reduction of red tape through process reviews. Encourage continued economic diversification. Increase collaboration with provincial and federal levels of government. Increase Calgary s profile as an international tourist destination globally. Encourage the approval of new pipelines. Support the revitalization of the downtown core. Utilize the powers in the coming City Charter prudently and responsibly. Advocate for the implementation of robust and comprehensive strategies to ensure Council is operating and spending responsibly. Support Calgary Economic Development in implementing its head office attraction strategy. page 10 - esmahanrazavi.ca

SMART DEVELOPMENT policies Advocate for innovation in development by updating by-laws and reducing red tape. Work with residents, community associations, healthcare professionals and stakeholders to ensure Ward 6 communities support the lifestyles of seniors. Strongly advocate to reform Calgary's inefficient secondary suites process. Support development that mitigates our traffic concerns. Identify areas to improve walkability in Ward 6. Work to increase the amount of efficient and effective public transportation. Encourage the construction of a variety of housing developments to promote choice and affordability for Calgarians. page 11 - esmahanrazavi.ca

SAFE COMMUNITIES policies Advocate for a proactive approach to policing that places an emphasis on community policing. Work to ensure that proactive steps are taken in Ward 6 communities and across Calgary to avoid pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Champion reversing Council's decision to remove fluoride from our drinking water. Advocate for affordable housing across Calgary and address the need for ongoing maintenance of existing housing stock. Promise to be the most accessible, visible and responsive Ward 6 Councillor by holding town halls, forums and using email and social media to respond to your needs promptly. Champion a reduction in the use of photo radar and more face-to-face contact with drivers. Research the feasibility, cost and public willingness to fence dog parks. page 12 - esmahanrazavi.ca

WORLD-CLASS INFRASTRUCTURE policies Support the construction of a new arena on the Stampede Grounds using a partial amount of taxpayer money if return on investment is demonstrated. Continue to make flood mitigation a priority by working with the provincial and federal governments to fund major projects in addition to locally funded ones. Continue to advocate for residents impacted by construction of the South West Ring Road with area MLAs and the provincial government. Advocate for the construction of rail to the airport in conjunction with financial contributions from the provincial and federal governments. Engage with the Calgary Airport Authority to begin discussions around costs and feasibility of renovating the domestic terminal at the Calgary International Airport. page 13 - esmahanrazavi.ca
