Press Releases American Cancer Society Discovery Ball Exceeds $2.4 Million CHICAGO May 10, 2010 More than 1,100 people gathered April 24 for the 4 th annual American Cancer Society Discovery Ball at Chicago s Civic Opera House. The event raised more than $2.4 million to fund American Cancer Society programs and services offered at no charge to cancer patients and their families, while also saving lives by helping people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back. Tony and Emmy award-winning actor Martin Short was the featured guest and performed at the event in addition to helping generate excitement for the live auction. The success of this year s American Cancer Society Discovery Ball is a true testament to the philanthropic support of the Chicago business community and individuals who are committed to making a difference in the fight against cancer, said Greg Case, President and CEO of Aon Corp., who along with his wife Mamie chaired the event. Mamie and I are thrilled to have had the opportunity to chair such a wonderful and inspiring celebration that will have a direct impact on the lives of cancer patients and caregivers. The evening also featured nearly 230 silent auction items and 12 live auction packages and a raffle which raised more than $500,000. Some of the live auction items included including a Bermuda island getaway on a private jet with eight guests and a pair of platinum and diamond open square drop earrings from the Tiffany Legacy Collection. American Cancer Society Welcomes Martin Short to American Cancer Society Discovery Ball CHICAGO April 15, 2010 Tony and Emmy award-winning actor Martin Short will be the featured guest at the 4 th annual American Cancer Society Discovery Ball at Chicago s Civic Opera House on April 24. Short will perform at the black-tie event, which has raised nearly $6 million since its inception in 2007. The money raised will support the organization s mission to help people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back to ensure a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Martin Short is an iconic comedian and we are thrilled to have him join us as the featured guest for the American Cancer Society Discovery Ball, said Greg Case, President and Chief Executive Officer of Aon Corp who, along with his wife, Mamie, is chairing this year s event. Mamie and I believe laughter is the best medicine, and while many people unfortunately have been touched by this terrible disease, the Discovery Ball is a celebration of all the accomplishments that have and will be made in the fight against cancer. Short began his career on Canada s SCTV Comedy Network and immediately proved his ability as a comedic chameleon with his impressions. Following a stint on Saturday Night Live, Short made his big screen debut in The Three Amigos and over the years has appeared in releases such as Inner Space, Three Fugitives and Father of the Bride. Short has written, produced and starred in comedy specials for Showtime and NBC television and won two Cable Ace awards and an Emmy for his work. A veteran of the theatre, Short has appeared on stage in The Goodbye Girl, The Producers, Fame Becomes Me and won a Tony Award in 1999 for Little Me. The ACS Discovery Ball will begin at 5:30 p.m. and includes a reception, silent auction, dinner, live auction and entertainment. The live auction will feature several one-of-a-kind items, including a Bermuda island getaway on a private jet with eight guests and a pair of platinum and diamond open square drop earrings from the Tiffany Legacy Collection. The earrings are bezel set with pear brilliant cut diamonds and round brilliant cut diamonds weighing 3.70 carats total weight. More than 1,000 guests are expected to attend and will consist of corporate sponsors, business leaders, underwriters and guests from a diverse cross-section of Fortune 500 corporate, medical, banking, health, legal and accounting companies. This year s event is sold out.
