Recovery College We will be covering What is Recovery? What is a Recovery College? Our Recovery College Journey So Far Patient involvement Accreditation Feedback from service users 2

What is meant by Recovery? Recovery is a personal journey. A journey involving the changing of ones attitudes, values, goals and skills in order to overcome limitations imposed by illness. The outcome of which is the development of new meaning and purpose in life Anthony (1993) 3

What is a Recovery College? Recovery Colleges offer co-developed and co-facilitated educational courses with students about mental health and recovery. The courses are designed to empower people to become an expert in their recovery and increase ones knowledge and skills to promote selfmanagement. Each person is an expert in their own care and we work together with each student on their own personal recovery journey whatever that may be. 4

Recovery College Ethos Hope, Control and Opportunity are at the heart of all courses. Courses should be recovery focused and instil hope. We rely on service users as experts by experience to help create courses together that add to and build on their recovery journey. Hope Control Opportunity 5

Feedback from service users I found the Recovery College courses helpful as it helps me brush up on my education. I like the AQA Music Production course as music is a passion of mine and I feel good when I am on the course. Getting an AQA certificate helps me with my future plans which include further education and employment. I find the Unit Award Scheme worthwhile and I would definitely recommend it to other Service Users and services. (DM) The Recovery College is a good thing. Education is always a good thing it helps me learn new perspectives. (RC) The Recovery College is worthwhile doing it helps me learn about my physical health so I would recommend it to others. I also really enjoy the drama group. (FW) I found the Recovery College helpful as you learn from the AQA courses, it gets your brain thinking. It also helps you do something instead of nothing and helps me with my self-esteem. It also helps us learn from each other in the classes and I would recommend it to everyone. (DMg) Going to the garden for a course gives me a sense of freedom. I get to think about something else other than my situation and being on the ward all the time. (CS) The chilled atmosphere of the Recovery College is what I like. (RZ) 17
