Degree This Information Packet provides the prospective applicant with information about the Dental Hygiene Program admission process at Montgomery County Community College and includes: Dental Hygiene Admissions Information and Point Score Worksheet Any person is eligible to begin coursework at Montgomery County Community College toward qualifying for admission to the Dental Hygiene Program and A.A.S. degree; however, admission requires that the applicant must be able to meet Essential Functions Requirements and Special Admission Guidelines.
DENTAL HYGIENE ADMISSIONS INFORMATION Montgomery County Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree with a concentration in Dental Hygiene. Upon completion of the Dental Hygiene Program, the graduate is qualified to take the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination and seek licensure as a Dental Hygienist. Changes in the curriculum and admission requirements for the Dental Hygiene Program may occur between the time the applicant applies to the College and the time of acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program. Applicants must meet any requirements in place for the Dental Hygiene Program at the time that acceptance into the Program is offered. Admission The Dental Hygiene Program offers Acceptance to 50 qualified applicants each Fall semester. All science courses (BIO 131, BIO 132, BIO 140) must be completed before submitting your Dental Hygiene Petition. To be considered for Acceptance, all Dental Hygiene Program applicants must meet the Program s Special Admission Guidelines (Montgomery County Community College Course Catalog). In addition, the applicant must be able to perform the Essential Functions required in the curriculum. All applicants to the Dental Hygiene Program are required to demonstrate a minimum of six hours of observation in a dental office in order to ensure that the applicant is familiar with the work environment in which most dental hygienists are employed. Written verification from the dentist or dental hygienist, written on dental office letterhead, is required of each applicant to verify either current dental office employment or completion of the six hour observation in a dental office. Verification must be submitted to the Dental Hygiene Advisor, sconnoll@mc3.edu by January 31 st prior to the fall semester that the student desires to enter the Dental Hygiene Program. Applicants seeking admission to the Dental Hygiene Program are required to submit a completed electronic, online Petition for Dental Hygiene Program Admission to the College s Enrollment Services. Completed Petitions are accepted only during the following time frame:
Fall Admission Consideration January 2 from 9 a.m. thru January 31 at 4:00 p.m. Petitions must be submitted electronically. No Petitions will be accepted after this date and time. Applicants are strongly advised to meet with the Dental Hygiene Advisor, Sharon Connolly, before submitting the electronic Petition for Dental Hygiene Program Admission to verify completion of all Special Admission Requirements, the completeness of their records and assistance in navigating the online submission process if needed. Acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program is highly competitive. Dental Hygiene Program admission decisions are made based on number of required courses completed to date in the Dental Hygiene Program, course grades, SAT/ACT scores, place of permanent residence and year of application. A total point score is used in ranking those applicants who submit a completed electronic Petition for Standard Dental Hygiene Program Admission during the January 2 nd through January 31 st timeframe (see attached Point Score Worksheet). The total point score for each applicant is ordered from highest to lowest with seats offered to those with the 50 highest total point scores. In the event that there are applicants with the same total point score and one is a veteran, the veteran will receive priority in compliance with PA DOE Act 46 Higher Education Course Scheduling Preference for Veterans Students Act. In all other cases, applicants with the same total point score are ordered by a recalculated GPA from highest to lowest. NOTE: the recalculated GPA is determined solely on the grades earned in the completed non-dhg courses required by the Dental Hygiene Program s Sequence of Courses (Montgomery County Community College Course Catalog). Transfer course grades and CLEP examination results are included in the calculation. Transfer credits earned without a letter grade (AP, military evaluation, challenge examination) are not included in the recalculated GPA. All applicants who have filed a completed electronic Petition for Dental Hygiene Admission will be notified of the decision (Acceptance; Alternate List Pending Acceptance) in April. The names of those applicants who receive a Non-Acceptance letter are removed from future consideration until the applicant re-submits an electronic Petition for Dental Hygiene Program Admission the next year or thereafter. Each April, 10 applicants are sent a letter notifying them that they have been placed on the Alternate List Pending Acceptance. Applicants who receive this letter are offered acceptance to the Dental Hygiene Program only if 1 of the 50 accepted applicants declines the seat. Receipt of an Alternate List Pending Acceptance letter does not guarantee entrance into a future Dental Hygiene class nor are applicants who receive an Alternate List Pending Acceptance letter carried over to the next admission cycle. Should a seat not become available in the Dental Hygiene Program, those applicants in receipt of an Alternate List Pending Acceptance letter must re-submit an electronic Petition for Dental Hygiene Admission the next year or thereafter.
All applicants offered an Acceptance or an Alternate List Pending Acceptance letter are required to respond in writing to the offer by a required date specified in the letter. Failure to respond by this date results in a loss of acceptance or pending acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program. Requests to defer acceptance are not considered. Accepted applicants who do not accept the offered seat or those who wish to defer admission must re-submit an electronic Petition for Dental Hygiene Program Admission the next year or thereafter. All applicants who receive an Acceptance or an Alternate List Pending Acceptance letter and confirm their acceptance in writing are required to attend a mandatory Dental Hygiene Program Orientation held by the Director of the Dental Hygiene Program. This three hour Orientation provides information about the Dental Hygiene Program and its pre-matriculation requirements including CPR, malpractice insurance, physical examination, immunizations, drug screening, etc. At this session, Accepted applicants order uniforms required by the Dental Hygiene Program and register for fall semester classes. Failure to attend the mandatory Dental Hygiene Program Orientation will result in the loss of acceptance to the Dental Hygiene Program.
