Teacher's Notes Welcome! These slides will explain the basics of what your students can expect during puberty and some changes they can make to manage it. There are interactive parts throughout to keep attention and see how much they're learning. These can also be used as a competitive game between 4 groups by updating the "Scores" page after each interaction. *You may find that the following slides are not suitable for your students, or may be difficult to use in your area. They can be removed without difficulty. "Exceptions" introduces intersex and transgender youth, saying they will experience puberty differently from other boys and girls. "Possible Consequences of Sex" discusses partnered sexuality, defining different types of sex and explaining how people can reduce the risks of pregnancy and STIs. 2

Teacher's Activity Demo (To be done before class) This activity demonstration will allow you to become familiar with the types of interactive tools used in this presentation. Please test this out before you get into the classroom and make sure that the slides are set up so that all answers are hidden. 1 'Drag to reveal' answers for many actvities. Look for the grey dashed box, and drag it out to reveal the answer. For best results, drag by the dashed outline. For example, STI = 2 Erase to reveal. For the true/false final questions, the correct answer and sometimes an explanation is revealed by using the eraser tool to erase a white pen mark which has been used to cover the answers in advance. You can practice by erasing to reveal our logo here, and then covering it back up with a broad stroke white pen mark. When you close the presentation, do not save. The next time you open the presentation, it will be ready to go! 3

Introduction Puberty can start at any time between 8 and 16 years old, but usually begins around 12 to 14 years old. Everyone develops at their own pace, whether you start the changes earlier or later, you will get there! Puberty begins when the body releases certain chemicals, called hormones, which start a series of changes. Boys and girls have all of the same hormones in their bodies, but as they enter puberty. Boys will have more testosterone Girls will have more estrogen These hormones make their bodies develop in different ways. 5

Changes Not all of the changes in puberty are on the body. During puberty, boys and girls will also change Their emotions The ways they think The way they see themselves Their internal body Their brains! Sometimes people can feel confused or frustrated by all the changes happening to them. This is normal, and all of the changes will either pass or become part of everyday life. 6

Changes in Boys Like girls, boys bodies will gain size and mass everywhere. They will grow taller and gain weight. On average, boys will develop more muscles and broader shoulders than girls, but the earliest signs of puberty will be growing hair in the armpits and on the genitals as well as ejaculation. 11

The Penis During puberty, the penis and testicles will grow. Penises will also have more frequent erections, where they get harder, longer and thicker and point upwards to the body. There is no connection between how big a penis is when it is not erect and how big it is when erect. Despite jokes about penis size and sexual pleasure, larger penises do not give or receive more pleasure. How much does penis size vary? 13

Wet Dreams Sometimes a boy will release semen in his sleep. This is called a wet dream or nocturnal emission. During puberty, wet dreams may happen often or not at all, and they will happen less often as you get older Wet dreams can be confusing or embarrassing, but they are completely normal. Sometimes they result from a sexy dream or a boy stroking his penis in his sleep, but most often they happen on their own. Can unpredictable ejaculations happen when a boy is awake? 20

Changes in Girls Like boys, girls will grow taller and gain weight. Girls will also develop breasts and wider hips during puberty. Some girls may start puberty at 8 or 9, while others may start a few years later. On average, girls start puberty a year before boys, usually starting by growing hair under the arms or on the genitals, starting to grow breasts, or having their first period (menstruation). During puberty, girls also grow more muscles and fat, which they need to circulate the main hormones found in girls, which is estrogen. In other words, you need to gain some weight to start puberty! 22

Body Image As you gain fat and muscle in puberty, it is important to remember that feeling good about yourself as a person is more important than your weight or appearance. Some girls will naturally eat more and be slim, while others may gain weight more easily. This depends on how your body works. If you have a balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables and get regular exercise, you will be a healthy weight that s natural for you, neither too fat or thin! 23

Menstruation Periods Menstruation, or a period, is when the inner wall of the uterus (the part where a baby would grow) sheds itself out of your body. As a result, girls will bleed from about 3 to 7 days. Generally, a girl will bleed the most in the first two days of her menstruation While having a period may seem hard, it s all a part of being a woman, and will impact your routines less and less 28

Other Vaginal Fluids A bit of discharge is normal. This is natural lubricant that keeps your vagina healthy. It is generally clear or slightly milky, and becomes pale yellow when it dries on your underwear. Around ovulation (when the egg is released), there may be more fluids and discharge, and fluids tends to get thicker and stickier. This is to help with reproduction. A girl's vagina also produces more fluid when she is sexually aroused, which can help during sex. If at any time you experience an unexpected color in the discharge from your vagina, or smell a strong odor that is new, see your doctor. How often can girls be aroused? 34

Sexuality In addition to physical and mental changes, puberty is a time when you will start to have sexual feelings and understand yourself and your body in new ways. 37

There is no right age to have sex. The Right Age for Sex If you believe everything you read or hear, you might think all teens are having sex. That is not true. A 2010 survey showed that only about 30% of Canadians ages 15 17 had intercourse.* Many people wait until they are in a healthy and trusting relationship, and finding someone you feel safe and comfortable with can take time. *You can see where we learned this and find out more about how many Canadian teens are having sex in "Statistics related to trends in the sexual behaviors of Canadian teenagers" in the Check the Research section of sexualityandu.ca. 39

Teacher's Activity Demo (To be done before class) This activity demonstration will allow you to become familiar with the interactive component of this presentation. Please test this out before you get into the classroom, and ensure that the board is at an appropriate height for students to be able to participate. 1 Drag boxes. In this activity, students drag boxes containing labeled activities to designate whether it is an example of "GOOD HYGIENE", "BAD MANNERS" or to be done "ONLY IN PRIVATE."
