CORNPICKER AND MILK 2006- WHAT S THE DIFFERENCE? Nutritionists Team Webinar Series September 25, 2015 Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company ( Dow ) or an affiliated company of Dow

18

First of all What is Milk 2006? Milk 2006 A hybrid-selection spreadsheet using corn silage sample lab analysis values ( the ones we get from CVAS) to calculate Milk/ton and Milk/acre for each hybrid. This is based on hybrids respective energy values and expected Dry Matter Intake predicted both from NDF and Invitro NDFD. 18

Why are we adding another report? There are several things we do not like about Milk 2006 18

Kernel Processing in Milk 2006 All identical 104lbs 728lbs 18

If a hybrid is drier, it is penalized All identical 109 lbs 763 lbs 18

When NDFD is high 18

When NDFD is high All identical Milk 2006 thinks NDFD never gets better than 67% In this case, the last hybrid, will be ranked for quality, just after the one with 61%NDFD 18

18

Unbelievable bias towards starch Mycogen has an NDFD that is 12.7 points higher, with 2.5 points lower starch, and still comes in 2 nd on our OWN PLOT REPORT! 18

Underlying Assumptions of Milk 2006 are not valid for many farms: NDFD is not as important as starch is in a silage hybrid Milk 2006 includes NDFD, but it does not adequately account for its effect on feed intake and milk yield on a per cow basis Variation in NDFD of up to 10 percentage units can have a greater effect on profitability than a 20% variation in forage yield amounts Especially for high-producing cows 18

Advantages CornPicker can bring to our Plot Reporting We won t be arguing/ trying to explain the bias of Milk 2006 on our own Plot Reports Puts our competitors on the defensive Allows NDFD to shine Based on research out of Dr. Mike Allen s Lab at MSU, one of the most highly respected dairy research scientists in the world 18

CornPicker for Silage what is it? 18

CornPicker for Corn Silage CornPicker A partial budget method to select corn silage hybrids by comparing Yield and Quality numbers of two hybrids, focusing on the value increased NDFD brings to a farm. Individual farm data and current prices for milk and feedstuffs is incorporated into the program. 18

Affecting profitability relative costs Corn Silage Cost of Producing or Buying Storing Feeding Corn Grain 18

for Silage Partial budget for the effect of change in corn hybrids Differs from hybrid-selection indices, includes farm and market information that vary over time 18

Harvest Population Dry Matter % DM Yield NDFD NDF Crude Protein For our purposes, each hybrid in a plot will be compared to the plot average 18

18

18

Comparative Rankings Milk 2006 CornPicker NDFD is the primary determinant of hybrid rank, not Starch content 18

Silage Plot 2014 18

18

Differences in Plot Reporting Current Milk 2006 New CornPicker version CornPicker emphasis on NDFD, will raise BM1 hybrids as well When selling TMF, may choose to highlight the Milk 2006 Report, emphasizing tonnage and starch 18

Select the CornPicker Template 18

In Summary Milk 2006 Emphasizes Starch Values Tonnage Penalizes drier hybrids CornPicker Emphasizes NDFD Typically will make BMR hybrids shine Starch not as valued Will respond to changes in commodity prices of Soybean meal and Corn as added ingredients 18

However, digestibility is the driver to what becomes available to the cow. If the nutrients locked in the corn plant are not digestible, then they become manure. This is a quick numerical comparison chart of energy potential as it is related to digestible and undigestible NDF in the plant. *30 hour time points are determined by in vitro analysis all others are determined by NIR analysis supplied by Cumberland Valley Analytical Services. 50 DOW RESTRICTED - For DOW internal RESTRICTED use only - For internal use only 50

SELLING WITH UNDF DATA How could you use this new undf report to support sales? Show producers that Mycogen BM3 BMR has lower (that s good) undf30 than Pioneer BM1. Explain that feeding lower undf forage allows for feeding more forages and less grain or purchased feeds. Using 56 squares (aka: Nelson Consultants DMI space) approach, demonstrate BM3 advantage. 53 DOW RESTRICTED - For DOW internal RESTRICTED use only - For internal use only 53

SELLING WITH UNDF DATA What other advantages to BM3 does this report highlight?
