Helps you breath easy Breath Tracker Maui Waena Intermediate, Maui Ethan Harris, Aukai Ahyat, George Frendo J. Suzuki Middle School Division 11/2/2015
Executive Summary: We are creating a device called the Breath Tracker. This device would be a replacement for the Spirometer. The Spirometer is a commonly used medical machine for people with lung conditions. It assesses how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale. We are advancing this technology by making our Breath Tracker portable and making it able to send results from it over distances via bluetooth. We are also making it more simplistic so it is easier to use. There are over 30 million Americans with some type of breathing disorder, ranging from asthma to COPD and Cystic Fibrosis. Many of these people use the spirometer but it is inconvenient for them because they have to go to the doctor s office to use it, and sometimes that requires long car drives or even plane flights. This creates a need and an automatic market for our product We think it will be successful because it will help a lot of people so as a result a lot of people will want to buy it. We think the breath tracker will be successful also because it's different from other products out there that monitor breathing because of its portability and its ability to relay data directly to the doctor. The Business The breath tracker name came from that specific purpose it's supposed to track lung strength and we thought it had a catchy ring to it. Also one of our owners has Cystic Fibrosis and every several months or so he has to fly to Oahu depending on how good he's doing and it's tiring for him. It is also costly for his family and dangerous as he is exposed to so many germs in the confined space of the plane and in the hospital where they do the testing. He said he wished that there was a way that doctors could just track his breathing from Maui, and then that gave us the name, Breath Tracker Our company s mission is to help our customer track their lung strength. We provide a safe, accurate way of monitoring lung health that is portable and convenient. Our goal is to make life a little easier for those with breathing conditions.
We all want the company to reach its peak and produce enough breath trackers so that it is available for all who could benefit from its use. Our objectives are: making portal breath tracker to provide accurate breath tracking to make a convenient way for doctors to monitor the health of their patients to ensure that each of our devices is reliable and longlasting Idea for the Product or Service The idea for the breath tracker came from a need and that need is that when I have to travel to use the spirometer for a doctor's checkup, it gets tiring so I thought hey what if i could do it right here in my own home and that's why we are creating this. Our product is small and easy for transportation so you can track how good your lungs are, and so you don't have to travel if you don t have the spirometer at your local clinic. Our competitor is the spirometer but our product will not cost as much will be much more lightweight, portable, give feedback via bluetooth, and will be simpler to use. Marketing Our customers would be doctors and people with lung problems like cystic fibrosis. Also parents of the people with lung problems, so it's easier on their finances and gives them a sense of security that they have the power to monitor their child s breathing and provide much needed data directly to the doctor so that their child can be better cared for. How the breath tracker works is there will be something like a balloon at the end of a breathing tube and you breathe into the breath tracker and the balloon expands and it will have a sensor on it. The sensor will be activated when the balloon is blown and send information directly to the doctor via connection to a computer and an email that will be generated by the new readings. The doctor can calculate it or you can calculate it from home.
Since it is small and one of our objectives is to make sure it is affordable, we will keep the packaging simple. All the packaging would be is a cardboard in set to secure the breath tracker, surrounded by bubble wrap, and a cardboard outer box with our logo Our sales price would be $600 per unit. Our production cost is going to be kept to under $200 per unit. We feel confident that consumers would spend even more than the $600 for this lifesaving device, but as one of our company s objectives is to make the device available to as many as possible, we decided to keep our profit to a minimum. Our competition, the spirometer that is used in clinics costs about $2000 $2600 making it far less affordable for the average person We will give doctors and clinics a free trial, and I could post things online about it. I have experience with the product because I have Cystic Fibrosis so that gives me credibility and allows me to speak as an expert. We would sell it at medical conventions and clinics because there is the most business for us is. Finance The estimated amount it will cost to startup the business is about $50,000. We want to try to find a loan that is either interest free or very low interest for the first 12 months, so that we are able to pay it back quickly. We would need to take out a start up loan of at least $50,000. These funds would allow us to create our prototype and start our first manufacturing run of 200 units. All of our initial profits from the first run, $70,000, will be reinvested to create our next run. This next run will be for 250 devices as the prototyping costs will be a one time fee. We hope to find a good manufacturer who can help us develop a device that is both reliable and affordably built. After our second run, we will start to make a profit. With the cost of $50,000 for our cost, we will net $100,000 from which, my partners and I will start to earn a salary of 10% each of our monthly profits. The other 70% of the profits will be reinvested to build the company. Eventually, we may develop other medical devices targeted to help those with breathing problems to grow our company even more and provide greater support for people who have respiratory difficulties.
