Bowel Cancer Screening Programme Blackburn with Darwen Barbers Pilot Project Sadiq Patel BCSP Community Engagement Officer 1 st Dec 2013 31 st March 20 1

Executive Summary Evidence highlights that men have a lower uptake then women especially from Black Minority and Ethnic Communities. This pilot project utilised local community knowledge and Bowel Cancer Screening Programme data to identify low uptake high ethnic minority geographical areas in Blackburn with Darwen. The project involved actively seeking and engaging with barbers within two low uptake areas in Blackburn with Darwen. In total ten barbers were recruited to take part in the pilot. The main areas of the project included recruiting the barbers, training them individually within their salons in key BCSP messages. The barbers were then supported to plan one week s BCSP within their salons and record data of numbers engaged with and key issues raised by local communities. The project ran over ten weeks and was thoroughly grasped by the barbers who were keen to engage with health services again in future. Each barber was given a 50 gift voucher for salon equipment for their participation. The project was developed, facilitated and delivered by Sadiq Patel BCSP Community Engagement Officer with additional support from another parallel BCSP project which involved volunteers who were recruited in partnership with Beating Bowel Cancer Charity. Key comes Over sixteen hundred men were engaged within the salons by the ten barbers: No of customers engaged with below 60-1099 No of customers engaged with aged 60-75 - 671 BCSP Materials distributed - 1770 Volunteer hours utilised - 34 Recommendations The key recommendation from this pilot project was that utilising barbers in engaging specific communities is worthwhile as some of these communities use this venue as a social activity. Much to the surprise of the BCSP health promotion team, barbers were key in promoting the message to a hard to reach audience. The feedback in the main report (appendix 1 p5) from both the barbers and communities is very encouraging and adds further to the evidence of using innovative ideas to promote the BCSP in low uptake communities. The project is going to be repeated in other parts of Lancashire especially in white indigenous communities. Comparisons will then be drawn to measure the effectiveness of engagement and when data allows to measure uptake within the geographical areas. Volunteer supporting BCSP Barbers Pilot Project Very special thanks to Shahida Hanif (BCSP), Rachel Thomas (Beating Bowel Cancer), Volunteers and all 10 Barbers involved in this Pilot Project. This project would not have been successful with their immense enthusiasm, support and help. 2
