CAMPAIGN OVERVIEW Blue Crss Blue Shield f Michigan (BCBSM) is Michigan s largest insurer, cvering ver 4.4 millin peple thrughut the state. As part f the Blues nging effrt t help peple live healthy lifestyles, this fall, the rganizatin is fcusing its effrts n early cancer detectin. The campaign kicked ff in late August in a partnership with the University f Michigan via the Michigan Ftball Experience Sweepstakes. The campaign has a three tiered apprach, fcusing n prstate cancer in September, breast cancer in Octber, and men s health in Nvember, aka Mvember. The gal f this campaign is t activate students arund creating awareness fr men s health in Mvember by pulling tgether a public relatins plan t supprt the bjectives utlined belw. EARLY CANCER DETECTION: MOVEMBER, CHANGING THE FACE OF MEN S HEALTH Accrding t the American Cancer Sciety, mre than ne millin peple in the United States get cancer each year. Thrughut the fall, Blue Crss Blue Shield f Michigan and Blue Care Netwrk will lead an effrt t bring mre awareness t the fight against cancer and the imprtance f early detectin thrugh an integrated cmmunicatins campaign. The Michigan Department f Cmmunity Health reprts that cancer is the secnd leading cause f death in Michigan, cntributing t significant ecnmic and scial csts. An estimated 55,660 peple in Michigan were diagnsed with cancer during 2010 and 20,740 were prjected t die frm cancer. Uninsured patients and thse frm ethnic minrities are much mre likely t be diagnsed with cancer at a later stage when treatment is mre extensive, debilitating and cstly. Over the curse f the next three mnths (Octber, Nvember, December), an integrated cmmunicatins team will be cmmunicating the imprtance f early cancer detectin and the imprtance f building a trusting relatinship with a primary care physician. Given the timeframe, the PRSSA students will fcus n the third mnth, Mvember. Every Nvember, the Mvember Fundatin encurages men t grw mustaches t raise funds and awareness fr men s health, specifically prstate cancer and ther cancers that affect men. The gal f Mvember is t change the face f men s health. All men are at risk fr prstate cancer, but lder men, African American men and men with a family histry f prstate cancer have a higher risk. Prstate cancer is the secnd mst cmmn cause f cancer death in men. Breast cancer is the secnd leading cause f cancer death in wmen, exceeded nly by lung cancer. Accrding t the Michigan Department f Cmmunity Health (MDCH), in 2010, 8,108 prstate cancer cases were diagnsed and f thse cases there were 981 deaths in the State f Michigan. The same year, 6,918 breast cancer cases were diagnsed which led t 1,492 deaths. MDCH als reprted that f the prstate cancer cases, 256 were diagnsed in men less than 50 years ld. 6,246 were f men between the ages f 50-74 and 1,669 were f men 75 and lder. In the breast cancer cases, 1,408 were f wmen less than 50 years ld. 4,097 were f wmen between the ages f 50-74 and 1,517 were f wmen 75 and lder. Key Message #2: Early detectin and preventin can save lives. Prstate cancer is highly curable if caught early enugh. Accrding t The Natinal Cancer Institute (NCI), men have a 100 %, five-year relative survival rate if diagnsed in the lcal and reginal stages. The rate drps t 28% if diagnsed in the distant stage. Lcal stage means that there is n sign that the cancer has spread utside f the prstate. This crrespnds t AJCC stages I and II. Abut 4 ut f 5 prstate cancers are fund in this early stage. Reginal stage means the cancer has spread frm the prstate t nearby areas. This includes stage III cancers and the stage IV cancers that haven't spread t distant parts f the bdy. Distant stage includes the rest f the stage IV cancers all cancers that have spread t distant lymph ndes, bnes, r ther rgans. Death rates frm breast cancer have been declining since abut 1989. These decreases are believed t be the result f earlier detectin thrugh screening and increased awareness, as well as imprved treatment. Accrding t the Natinal Cancer Institute (NCI), the five-year relative survival rate depending n the stage diagnsed is: Stage 0: 93% Stage I: 88% Stage IIA: 81% Stage IIB: 74% Stage IIIA: 67% Stage IIIB: 41% Stage IIIC: 49% Stage IV: 15% Yu can decrease the risk f all cancers by nt smking, maintaining a healthy diet, staying physically active and seeing a dctr regularly t maintain verall gd health.
