D e t e r m i N a t i o n F u n d r a i s i n g M a n u a l P a g e 2 Welcome! Thank you for joining the DetermiNation team and for making your miles mean something more fighting cancer and saving lives. American Cancer Society Mission: The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service Joining the DetermiNation team means more than just taking part in an event. It s about being part of team with a mission and a promise to save lives and leave cancer behind. It s about the important things like helping people stay well by helping them take steps to prevent cancer or find it early, helping people get well by providing rides to treatment and other support through every step of their cancer experience. And it s about the essential things like finding cures by funding groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancer s causes and cures, and fighting back by rallying communities everywhere to support laws to defeat cancer. Thank you for joining our fight to save lives faster by creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays. 100 Years of Saving Lives One hundred years ago the American Cancer Society began the fight of a lifetime the fight against cancer. After 100 years of saving lives and creating more birthdays, the American Cancer Society has worked tirelessly to transform cancer from deadly to treatable and from treatable to preventable Today, 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with cancer are surviving (for at least five years). In fact, more than 400 people a day in the US are celebrating birthdays that would have otherwise been lost to the disease. We ve contributed to a 20 percent decline in cancer death rates in the US since the early 1990s. That means we ve helped save nearly 1.2 million lives during that time. We ve played a role in nearly every cancer research breakthrough in recent history. Each year, we help cancer patients everywhere get the help they need when they need it. For example, last year alone we assisted more than a million people who called us for help, providing free services like a place to stay while traveling for treatment, rides to treatment, emotional support, and much more. Our work has helped lead to a 50 percent drop in smoking since the 1960s, which has contributed to a drop in overall lung cancer death rates. And after 100 years, the American Cancer Society is more passionate than ever to make this cancer s last century. With your help, we can finish the fight against cancer together. For information and statistics on how the American Cancer Society is fighting cancer, please see 100 Years of Saving Lives on the DetermiNation Fundraising page.

D e t e r m i N a t i o n F u n d r a i s i n g M a n u a l P a g e 5 Fundraising Policies All offline donations raised are to be sent to the American Cancer Society office. DetermiNation participants cannot transfer funds to another participant or event unless they are injured or pregnant (with written verification from a licensed medical doctor) or are members of the military whose service duty requires them to drop from the program. Please contact DetermiNation Event Manager, Dianna Coscette, for more information regarding this policy. Funds raised may not be used to cover expenses for guests. Recommitment Approximately halfway through your DetermiNation event season, the American Cancer Society will provide you with information regarding recommitment. We will ask you to recommit to secure your place on the team and to also guarantee your fundraising minimum with a credit card. (If you have already met your final fundraising minimum, you do not need to submit a credit card number). At the final fundraising deadline, if you have NOT reached the fundraising minimum for your event, the credit card you provided at recommitment will be charged. On the Final Fundraising Deadline -- we ask that you reach your minimum fundraising goal. If you are not at your minimum we ask that you make a personal donation and we will charge your credit card to bring you up to your fundraising minimum. Funds charged will be reimbursed at your request providing you fundraise the additional funds within approximately two weeks after the fundraising deadline. Therefore, at Recommitment you acknowledge that you will donate the difference between what you have raised and the minimum fundraising goal by the due date. Should you decide not to recommit, you will need to drop off of the team at recommitment. Fundraising Reimbursement After the final fundraising deadline, you may continue to submit funds to the American Cancer Society until the reimbursement deadline (approximately two weeks after final deadline). After this date it is not possible to have charged money reimbursed. We can only reimburse what was charged to a credit card to bring the fundraising total up to goal. You must request reimbursement through your DetermiNation Event Manager, Dianna Coscette.
