Reaching Out: Providing Inclusive Services for Families of Children Section 2: Including Single Parent Families The combination of being a lone parent and having a child on the autism spectrum can make it very challenging for the parents to be involved in their child s education. This is exacerbated by other demands such as looking after the other children, employment, housing issues, and the practical management of the day-to-day affairs. The way each individual parent copes with these demands depends on their own personality and the availability of formal and informal networks. It also depends on how accepted the parent feels within the school community. Single parents with other factors such as belonging to a minority group, being on the autism spectrum themselves may face additional difficulties and discrimination. Although it is difficult to predict how each lone parent is affected, the following guidelines provide a few starting points to consider.
