Health Classes 8 th Grade 2 nd, 3 rd, & 4 th Quarter Materials Understanding Sexuality: Making Healthy Choices Lesson 1: What s It All About? Introduces human sexuality as a broad subject, encompassing not only anatomy and physiology but also feelings, relationships and choices. Lesson 2: Who Decides? Looks at decision-making skills and links basic values with decisionmaking. Lesson 3: Sex Roles. Explores the impact of sex role stereotyping on human potential. Lesson 4: Expressing Sexuality. Looks at sexuality as an integral part of our lives that can be expressed in healthy or unhealthy ways. Strong emphasis on abstinence. Lesson 5: Sexuality, Intimacy, and Relationships. Explores the need for intimacy and considers the difference between true intimacy and close physical contact. Lesson 6: Sexual Orientation. Dispels myths, provides accurate information about sexual orientation and raises the issue of social justice as it applies to this topic. Lesson 7: Pregnancy, Labor, and Birth. Provides information about some of the physical and emotional changes involved in pregnancy, labor and birth. Lesson 8 and 9: Teenage Pregnancy. Looks at the realities of teenage pregnancy and the difficult choices involved. Lesson 10: Planning Families. Explains pregnancy prevention methods, including abstinence, as an important part of planning for the future. Lesson 11: Sexual Assault and Self Protection. Increases understanding about sexual assault and enhances self-protection skills. Lesson 12: Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Provides information on sexually transmitted diseases, including symptoms, prevention, and impact on future health and relationships. Lesson 13 and 14: AIDS. Relates accurate information about AIDS to everyday living including the choices we do (or do not) make to protect ourselves, and the way we respond to others. Lesson 15: Putting It All Together. Looks at how hard and complicated real relationships can be and reminds us of the power we all have to make positive choices for ourselves. Lesson 16: Now We Know. Provides a chance to share knowledge and understanding to offer comments about the course, and to ask additional questions.
