Since its founding in 1919, CFUW has been working to improve the status of women, and to promote human rights, public education, social justice and peace. It holds special consultative status with the United Nations (ECOSOC) and belongs to the Education Committee of the Canadian Commission to UNESCO. However, we had a lively and hopefully constructive discussion under the guidance of Judy Gay on the two resolutions that are to be voted on at the CFUW AGM. We also enjoyed an abundant supply of tasty treats with tea and coffee. Those who attended felt that it was an interesting and worthwhile discussion. Our April meeting is another meeting that draws on our in house talent when the Issues group is going to allow us to benefit from their research when they give us a presentation entitled Expanding our Knowledge of Indigenous People in the Owen Sound Area Knowing the quality of the research that this group undertakes I am sure we can learn a great deal, so please join us for this meeting. Our April meeting will be held on: Date and time: Tuesday April 11th at 7pm Location: The lower level of St Andrew s Presbyterian Church 1 st Avenue West. Also at this meeting tickets will be sold for our next two meetings: Our May meeting is the main fund raiser of the year for our club and we are hosting Ted Barris speaking on The Great Escape a Canadian Story This will be held on May 9 th at 7:00 pm Ticket price is $20 This event is open to the public so secure your tickets early.
Our June meeting is our AGM and we are once again returning to Georgian College for a meal and speaker. We are still waiting for details of the menu. This will determine the price of tickets, but we hope to know that by the April meeting. If you come with either your cheque book or reasonable quantities of cash to the April meeting you will be able to buy tickets to both events. Two official meetings left before we select our reading list for the 2017/2018 season. We've had some great reads this year and more to come. Our next meeting, April 24, will be to discuss the works of Indigenous writer Basil Johnson. A reader's choice: choose one title to read from his many books. We are not a timid group and have lively discussions filled with fun and many laughs. GARDENERS INTEREST GROUP - 3rd Tuesday afternoons For their March meeting at Elizabeth Mullens' home, the Gardeners entertained Bill Moses, who spoke to us about our Native Trees. Bill has worked closely with staff at the Arboretum of the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority site at Inglis Falls, and thus has a good knowledge of the trees of our area. The April 18th meeting will be held at Jan Middleton's home at 1:30 pm. The topic will be Shade Plants. Each member will research one plant, and then give a short account, stressing why this plant works well in shady garden areas. At the General Meeting on April 11th, the Issues Group is presenting an interesting summary of their research done over the past couple of years on this extensive topic. With such educators as Judy Thomson, Donna and Kerina Elliott and others, prepare to learn something of the past, present and future connections that we have with our Indigenous neighbours. The usual April 27 Issues Group date to meet is cancelled this month. Thorsten will provide some background on this initiative, as well as membership information, brochures, and an update on where we are today. Although this will be an opportunity to become a member, there is absolutely NO obligation to do so. Each person attending is asked to provide $5.00 to help cover the speaker s costs. ART EXPLORER GROUP The bus trip to the McMichael Gallery on April 7 th, 2017 has been cancelled in light of the planned bus trip by the Active Life Styles Seniors Centre. Although there is not a confirmed date as yet for their bus trip it is to be sometime in June. It makes sense to combine our efforts and numbers. If you are a BALL member you will have heard Judy Beth's announcement regarding the trip and perhaps add your name to the sign up sheet.if you are still planning to go. This National award will be announced and presented at the 2019 AGM. Our club is permitted only one application. The executive unanimously voted to nominate Judy Thomson, one of our founding members, for this award. Following is our statement to the National Committee as our reasons for nominating Judy. Judy Thomson exemplifies the CFUW commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and the promotion of education and involvement in public affairs. Judy has devoted her life work to education. She began her career as a secondary school teacher, then taught for 19 years at Georgian College in Owen Sound. She received the Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence and was awarded the position of Professor Emeritus of the College. Even in retirement she continues her passion for teaching. Judy lectures for the Blue Water Association of Life Long Learning, Beaver Valley Life Long Learning Association, Georgian Triangle Learning Institute, Bruce County Museum and the Probus Club. At the invitation of the Chinese government, with her husband, Judy spent a year teaching English in China. Judy s community work includes Chair of the Tom Thomson Gallery Board, Chair of the Centre for Arts at Owen Sound and Chair of the Sweet Water Music Festival. Judy certainly has made a distinct and describable difference in her community and has been recognized for her efforts. She has been awarded Citizen of the Year by the City of Owen Sound and also Citizen s Contribution to the Arts Award by the Grey Bruce Arts Council. The Owen Sound CFUW executive and membership feel that she is certainly a notable woman. Our May 9th meeting is a special event with speaker speaker Ted Barris.
