Freud & Personality Development personality forms during the first few years of life, rooted in unresolved conflicts of early childhood Psychosexual Stages Oral (0-18 mos) - centered on the mouth Anal (18-36 mos) - focus on bowel/bladder elim. Phallic (3-6 yrs) - focus on genitals/ Oedipus Complex (Identification & Gender Identity) Latency (6-puberty) - sexuality is dormant Genital (puberty on) - sexual feelings toward others Strong conflict can fixate an individual at Stages 1,2 or 3

Freud's Stages of Psychosexual Development Freud believed that your personality developed in your childhood. Mostly from unresolved problems in the early childhood. Believed that children pass through a series of psychosexual stages. The id focuses it s libido (sexual energy) on a different erogenous zone.

Oral Stage 0-18 months Pleasure center is on the mouth. Satisfy drive of hunger and thirst by breast or bottle Sucking, biting and chewing. Related to later mistrust and rejection issues

Anal Stage 18-36 months Id wants pleasure of reducing tension by defecating & urinating Pleasure focuses on bladder and bowel control. Toilet training get superego to impose societal norms Self-control Holding back Related to later personal power issues

Phallic Stage 3-6 years Pleasure zone is the genitals. Coping with incestuous feelings. Focus on difference between boys and girls Emerging gender identity Related to later sexual attitudes

PHALLIC STAGE MALE OEDIPUS COMPLEX A boy s sexual feeling for his mother and rivalries with his father Psychological defenses against these threatening thoughts and feelings Form reaction pattern used throughout life Form personality through identification with father Diminish fear of castrationvicariously obtain mother through father

PHALLIC STAGE CASTRATION ANXIETY DAD IS A MAJOR THREAT. (FREUDIAN THEORIST VIEW THE DEATH OF FATHER OR DIVORCE AT THIS AGE DESTRUCTIVE. IF THE CHILD WISHES DAD GONE, AND DAD DOES DISAPEAR, THIS MAKES THE CHILD FEARFUL OF HIS THOUGHTS AND DESIRES. CALLED INFANTILE OMNIPOTENCE.

PHALLIC STAGE SOLUTION DROP DESIRE AND IDENTIFY WITH DAD DEVELOP SUPEREGO---ADOPT FATHERS VALUES GIVE UP ON SEX---MOVE TO LATENCY WHERE BOYS DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH GIRLS REPRESS THE WHOLE EVENT---BEST EVIDENCE IS NO EVIDENCE

Little Hans A 5 year old who was afraid to leave his house because he was afraid a horse would bite him. He developed the fear after seeing a horse fall down in the street. Freud believed this was a displacement of erotic feelings toward mother, aggressive feelings toward father.

PHALLIC STAGE PENIS ENVY GIRLS ENJOY THEIR SEXUAL ORGANS LIKE THE BOYS. BUT, THEY REALIZE THEY DO NOT HAVE A PROTRUDING ORGAN. SINCE YOU CAN T FEAR WHAT YOU DON T HAVE, THERE IS NO CASTRATION ANXIETY. THIS LEADS TO WOMEN HAVING WEAKER DEVELOPED SUPEREGOS. SOLUTION DEVELOP RELATIONSHIP WITH DAD, BUT KEEP SEXUAL IDENTITY WITH MOM.

Electra Complex The girl begins this stage, Freud claims she believes she has been castrated at some stage and blames her mother for this. The girl will initially treat her mother as a love object but will transfer her affections to her father. Freud says she will do this because she experiences penis envy and blames her mother for lack of penis. She realizes that she cannot have a penis, but wants a substitute. Freud claims the substitute desire is for a baby and turns to her father in the hopes that he can provide her with the baby as a surrogate for her anatomical deficiency. At this point, the girl has turned into a little woman. She may fear the loss of her mother s love if she is not like her, but this fear is less influential. Freud claims that this makes the girl s identification with her mother much weaker than the boy s identification with his father. This, says Freud, makes the girl weaker morally than the boy.

Latency Stage 6- puberty Time between resolution of Oedipus complex and puberty Usually not possible for sexual urges to be directly expressed Sexual energies are channeled into school and friends Cooties stage. A time of socialization

Genital Stage Sexual energies are invested in life Puberty to death. ADOLESCENCE SEXUAL INSTINCTS AND SEXUAL CONFLICTS REAPPEAR. FIRST MANIFESTATION ADOLESCENT CRUSH ON AN OLDER PERSON OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. ADULTHOOD Healthy sexual relations Marriage Child-rearing

Orally fixated people may need to chain smoke or chew gum. Or denying the dependence by acting tough or being very sarcastic. Anally fixated people can either be anal expulsive or anal retentive. Fixation A lingering focus of pleasure-seeking energies at an earlier psychosexual stage. Where conflicts were unresolved. Sometimes the fixation is caused by frustration, sometimes by overindulgence... and it s always the parents faults!
