Biographies Dr. Katherine Shear Marion E. Kenworthy Professor of Psychiatry Director of the Center for Complicated Grief at Columbia School of Social Work. Complicated grief is a serious, worryingly common, and poorly treated condition. Diagnostic criteria are still under development, but surveys suggest nearly 4% of the general adult population is likely to be suffering from current complicated grief (Kersting, 2011). Amongst people who are already seeking psychological help from mental health professionals, Complicated grief prevalence is likely to be over 20% (Pini, 2012). Complicated grief is typically comorbid with other disorders, is persistent over many years, and involves loss of parents, grandparents and friends as well as partners. Despite the availability of simple screening questions, complicated grief diagnosis is routinely missed with serious consequences for prolonged psychological distress, increased physical illness, and raised death rates (Stroebe, 2007). Dr. Shear has spent decades conducting clinical research in anxiety, depression and related disorders. She developed complicated grief treatment and confirmed its efficacy in three large NIMH-funded studies. This treatment is strength-based and incorporates methods from other proven efficacious psychotherapies to provide a short-term, focused approach to fostering adaptation to loss. She is widely recognized for her work in bereavement, including both research and clinical awards from the Association for Death Education and Counseling and invited authorship of articles for Uptodate and the New England Journal of Medicine.
