Choices Integrative Healthcare of Sedona 2nd Quarter 2016 Choices Healthy Views Focuses on Obesity What About Obesity? By Bonnie Elkhair FNP Obesity has been erroneously viewed by some as merely a vanity issue, measured with a mirror. Looking a little full? Inadvertently gained five pounds during a cruise or vacation, then gained another five pounds over the holidays? And not so easy these days to drop those unwanted pounds? What action will you take? Sometimes people delay attention to maintenance of healthy weight, even after larger clothing sizes are required. These days, a typical American diet can certainly sustain obesity. Easy access to those all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants, fast food, even fashionable plus-size garment shops at the mall, all sustain and glorify obesity. Obesity, or having a body mass index of 30 or higher, is a serious health problem that increases risk of multiple other serious health problems. Obesity increases risk of multiple cancers, including endometrial, breast, colon, kidney, gallbladder and liver cancers. Obesity increases risk of diabetes, degenerative joint disease, gallstones, gout, sleep apnea, depression and anxiety. Obesity is a health problem we can change. Healthy eating, healthy exercising and healthy sleeping can help optimize body composition and increase longevity. See your healthcare provider to measure your body mass index (BMI) to assure you re making good decisions!
