What is Coaching? Coaching vs Therapy THERAPY OBJECTIVE: Help a student deal with personal problems & issues that need to be analyzed and solved. Therapy is about reflecting on the person s past and seeking the cause or root of the problem. Therapy assumes that the person has a problem, or mental illness and is based on a disease model. COACHING OBJECTIVE: Assists a student in formulating what his or her life intentions are, uncovering deep beliefs which might be barriers to his or her positive movement and to move forward successfully. Coaching assumes that a person is lacking a skill to move out of a comfort zone.

Powerful Questions WHAT THEY ARE NOT: QUESTIONS WITH A YES/NO ANSWER Are you able to finish the project before the deadline? QUESTIONS WITH THE ANSWER ALREADY IN THE QUESTION Will you be disappointed when the team fails the sprint? Don t you think it is important to be on time for the meeting?

Powerful Questions A POWERFUL QUESTION ACTIVATES THE BRAIN

Powerful Questions THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: 1. You don t need to have the answer before asking the question. 2. Avoid rhetorical questions. 3. Use appropriate language. 4. Be okay with silence. Stop yourself from answering! 5. Practice. 6. Remember the purpose is for the other person to figure it out on their own.

#Selfcare

Self-Care to be Optimal YOU 2/3 of the adult population has experienced at least 1 adverse childhood experience. This may be you. Adversity and trauma may also occur to a person aged older than 18. This may be you.

Cycle of Self-Care

Know Yourself Take time to know your own adversity and trauma. Take time to explore your own adversity and trauma. Treat yourself to care. Don t bully yourself. You, too, deserve joy.

Building Blocks of Self-Care Crisis Care Trigger Care Daily Care

Daily Self-Care analogy: I brush my teeth daily to preserve my own health AND to be considerate to those around An me. I engage in daily mental self-care to preserve my own health AND to be considerate of those around me.

Triggers A trigger is a stimulus that sets off a memory of a trauma or a specific portion of a traumatic experience. (Trauma Informed Care in Behavioral Services, TIP Series, No. 57. SAHMSA, 2014)

Crisis Crisis can be defined as an unexpected time of intense difficulty, trouble or danger
