Letter from the President This 13th annual Emergency Medical Services Conference is open to all EMS, Fire, Police, Security, Nurses, Physicians and other Health Care Professionals, Hospital Administrators, Government and Facility Managers. The conference has five tracks of five workshops each for a total of 25 workshops. The track areas are BLS, ALS, Trauma, Multidiscipline Issues, and Management/Training. Continuing educational units for EMTs are awarded. Two additional workshops will be presented on Thursday evening. An outstanding faculty of experienced professionals has been assembled. This conference should help improve the delivery of Emergency Medical Services. Many scientific and product exhibits will be present. The Conference will again host a two-day silent auction. Those wishing to donate items or assist can contact Jackie Coates, Auction Chair, at jcoates@frontiernet.net or write to STEP. This registration form can also be obtained from the STEP website at, printed, and mailed with the registration fee. We invite you to participate. Featured Speakers Dr. Guy Haskell has been involved in EMS since 1983 and has served as a paramedic in the field, emergency department, ICU and Pediatric MICU He is also an editor and author and consultant nationwide with an international reputation. He holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University and instructorships in the major EMS disciplines, is the author of the EMS Pearls of Wisdom series with Jones and Bartlett, and publishes a monthly column on jems.com. James F. Goss, EMT-P is proactive leader in many aspects of EMS including air and ground ambulance as well as EMS education. He is on the faculty of Loma Linda University, School of Allied Health Professionals. He is also an Administrator for the US Air Force, a member of the California Air National Guard, a Flight Paramedic at Mercy Air Services Inc. and a Paramedic and Health Technician Officer with FEMA. At Loma Linda he instructs students who are obtaining their Baccalaureate degrees in Emergency Care. James holds Associate degrees in Administration of Justice, in Business Administration and Industrial Security, Bachelor degrees in Social Science and Emergency Medical Care and a Masters in Health Administration. James has written many article for JEMS magazine and other publications. Lindsey Meredith Simpson, EMT-P is an instructor in the Emergency Medical Care Program at Loma Linda University and a clinical instructor at UCLA Daniel Freeman Paramedic Education, UCLA Center for Prehospital Care. She is a Paramedic for American Medical Response, Ventura Division. She is the co-author of several articles for Jems Magazine including The Aging Heart and The Need to be More Professional. Frank Poliafico, RN is the Executive Director of the nonprofit Initial Life Support Foundation. He authored the textbook Emergency First Care (Brady/Prentice Hall) and has published numerous articles and papers on safety, health and emergency medical care. Frank is also an accomplished magician. Workshop and Faculty Information The Conference includes five different workshops tracks: BLS, ALS, Trauma, Multidiscipline Issues, and Management/Training. A total of 25 workshops are being presented with a wide range of topics. Please review the workshop choices carefully. It is suggested that members of your organization select different workshops to bring back to your organization a wide variety of information. Please fill out the registration form completely so that you are listed for all activities you plan to attend and you receive future Conference mailings directly. We are again very fortunate to have outstanding teachers for all the workshops. The faculty will provide an outline of the workshop information they plan to present in those areas that are applicable. This material will be distributed during the workshop. STEP hopes you have a significant learning experience at this Conference that will benefit you and the patients you care for. The mission of STEP is to inform and educate the EMS community and promote opportunities for the improvement of the EMS system.
