Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 3 Why have goals?

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 4 Results of No Goals Won t achieve Loss of energy and morale No way to measure success No way to compare to previous achievements Perception as a poor performer Won t be seen as a strong leader Can become the weak link

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 5 Challenge Definition: How you challenge yourself and the world around you

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 6 How does Challenge affect goals? How we choose our goals How we strive to achieve them What happens if we fail to reach our goals What happens if we reach our goals

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 7 Refresher of Birkman terms Usual behavior: your strength how you show up / speak up your best approach socialized behavior

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 8 Setting goals Low Usual Challenge Determined to win Uses caution in assessing risk; sometimes too much Wants to guarantee success May underpromise with the intention of overdelivering Breaks goal into manageable pieces Driven High Usual Challenge Likely to strive for lofty goals, maybe unrealistic May bite off more than they can chew Chooses a mission or huge goal Wants to do what no one has before

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 9 How You Attack Your Own Goals Low Usual Challenge Want to guarantee success Do everything you can to assure positive outcome May decline to engage if the path to success is unclear Will leave an unwinnable situation High Usual Challenge Want to deliver the result, no matter how costly Will work above and beyond to deliver the result May volunteer even when success looks improbable May stick with situation past the point of logic

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 10 How You assign goals Low Usual Challenge Selects projects/goals that can make the individual (and yourself) look good Typically can see the strengths of others, wants to leverage Don t take chances without calculating risk High Usual Challenge Select projects/goals that are demanding and stringent May expect too much of others Want others to stretch, live up to potential Driven to achieve

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 11 What if I have a mid-range score? Mid- range is typically between 40 60 Less obvious to you and people around you Likely to be situational May not be a significant issue for the individual May identify with both Low and High text

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 12 Choosing the right goal for you Tough Moderate Easy

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 13 Choosing the right goal for you Tough Difficult enough that success not guaranteed Blend of current skill and new growth Moderate Easy Choose to build confidence

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 14 Self-discipline Research study: Would you take the marshmallow?

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 15 Multiple Methods of Approach S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific Measurable Actionable Realistic Timely

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 16 Methods Yellow sticky note method list all the steps needed to achieve goal reorder for best timeline delegate steps when appropriate

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 17 Methods Vision boarding (What is a vision board?) Works well for right-brained individuals Creative Changeable Reinforcing Prominent, unavoidable

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 18 Understanding methodology Facts Concrete Tangible Examples Precedent Formulas Maps Role models Inspiration Stories Mantras Vision, mission Feelings themes

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 19 An example Goal Benefits and advantages Key steps When will I do this? Support and resources Outcomes and reflection Lose 100 pounds. By losing this weight I can live a healthier and more active lifestyle along with my spouse. Eat healthy and work out regularly. I have already started and will maintain steady weight loss until I lose it all within two years. My spouse has agreed to workout with me at the gym and support my overall goals. So far I have lost five pounds and thanks to the support of my spouse it's been fairly easy. I will continue to use him/her for motivation.

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 20 Refresher Needs: Ideal environment How you want to be treated Way you want others to support you Goals: How you want them set for you The kind of support while striving to reach goals

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 21 What I need while aiming for goal: Low Need Help breaking goal into small steps Realistic goals Recognition when goal met Less critique, more encouragement Help me win, don t drag me down High Need A goal that I can believe in Something worth my sacrifice Praise in moderation Require me to do a good job Don t praise unless it s worthy

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 22 How do you get the support you need? Hope and dream Complain if not present Hint at what you want Ask for what you need What do you do??

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 23 Refresher Stress behavior: How you react when stressed When things around you not going well Your least effective approach Something to avoid if possible Your behavior when goal not reached

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 24 Stress Behavior Low Challenge Kills you to fail May rationalize on the surface Feel self-blame but will never let world see it Want to save face and just move on High Challenge Hyper critical of performance May openly blame self for any problems Woulda-coulda-shoulda (regret) Beat yourself up

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 25 Tips for Stress management: Low Ask for critique, don t avoid it Refuse to be defensive Don t make excuses to yourself Accept that no success is devoid of stumbles Learn to welcome temporary failure as part of the work in progress High Remember that not trying is the real failure Take time to recognize the good vs. focusing only on improvements needed Learn to celebrate small successes along the way Remember that Good does not mean Perfection

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 26 What about meeting my goal? How do I recognize the achievement?

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 27 After the Goal is reached Low Bask in the limelight Remember how it all came together Praise others May forget to debrief or to recalibrate Wrap up the plan/notes before memory fades High Critique everyone s performance, including own Think about how the next time can be better Rush to take on new improvements May fail to celebrate Might have to force thanks

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 28 A coach s opinion: Be aware of your own filters when choosing, striving for and meeting your goals Be prepared to accept less than perfect when learning something new Sometimes the goal is really the stretch, not the outcome If you win at everything you try, are you trying things that are tough enough?

Copyright Corbett Consulting Group 2011 29 Closing thoughts to remember: G rowth required for a goal to be really worthy O pportunities abound to contribute look around and find yours A dvice from others who have gone before L everage the strengths you already possess S elf-discipline is a necessary factor
