PICO RITE Pico RITE Hearing Systems Overview The Pico RITE receiver-in-the-ear hearing instrument is easy to handle and comfortable to wear. The small RITE instrument, in combination with sophisticated technology, delivers tangible end-user benefits. This guide is designed to help you fit and manage Pico RITE hearing systems. Pico RITE with 60-Speaker Pico RITE with 85-Speaker Pico RITE with 100-Speaker Instant Fit Pico RITE with 100-Speaker Custom Fit Pico RITE hearing systems offer three speaker units: The 60-Speaker, which is appropriate for mild to moderate hearing losses The 85-Speaker, which is appropriate for moderate to moderately severe hearing losses The 100-Speaker, which provides additional power for severe hearing losses 5

Selection Chart for Acoustic Options The table below shows the acoustic options available for the three speaker units and the corresponding wax protection system to be used. Instant ProWax minifit Open Domes (6, 8, 10) Bass Domes Double Vent (6, 8, 10, 12) Bass Domes Single Vent (6, 8, 10, 12) Power Domes (6, 8, 10, 12) Custom Micro Mold Lite Tip ProWax 60-Speaker 85-Speaker Instant ProWax minifit Bass Domes Double Vent (6, 8, 10, 12) Bass Domes Single Vent (6, 8, 10, 12) Power Domes (6, 8, 10, 12) 100-Speaker Custom Power Mold ProWax 100-Speaker 6

PICO RITE Fitting Ranges Expected fitting ranges with each speaker unit are shown below. 60-Speaker 85-Speaker 100-Speaker db HL 0 20 db HL 0 20 db HL 0 20 40 40 40 60 60 60 80 80 80 100 100 100 120 250 500 1.000 2.000 4.000 8.000 Frequency (Hz) 120 250 500 1.000 2.000 4.000 8.000 Frequency (Hz) 120 250 500 1.000 2.000 4.000 8.000 Frequency (Hz) 7

Selecting the Speaker Unit Length Four receiver lengths are available for all speakers. No. 1 is the shortest, while no. 4 is the longest. Before fitting Pico RITE hearing instruments, it is necessary to determine the correct speaker unit length. The measurement procedure is the same for all speaker units. Place the measurement tool over the ear, keeping the top line horizontal. With your eyes at the same level as the ear, determine which mark is closest to an imaginary line running over the top of the ear canal. In this example, the correct choice is size 2. Power Molds will have a better fit if you choose a slightly longer wire length than you would when fitting a Power Dome. If the top of the ear canal falls between two numbers on the gauge, choose the higher number. If the speaker unit wire is too long, the hearing instrument will fall back over the ear and the microphones will point vertically instead of horizontally. It is also unlikely that the receiver wire will fit the contours of the ear correctly. If the speaker unit wire is too short, it will have a tendency to move out of the ear canal, and the hearing instrument will lose stability on the ear. 8

PICO RITE Attaching the Speaker Unit to a Pico RITE Hearing System The correct speaker unit attachment is imperative. The following instructions apply to all types of speaker units for Pico RITE hearing systems. 1 1 Slide the connector plug into the connector socket of the instrument 2 2 Ensure that the snap on the connector plug is completely inserted into the opening on the hearing instrument housing click 3 3 To test the attachment of the speaker unit to the hearing instrument, gently pull the speaker wire near the connection to the hearing instrument as shown. If the speaker comes off, then it was not attached properly. Speaker units can easily sustain internal damage if dropped. Before you attach the speaker unit, please place a dome on the speaker to protect it. 9

Detaching the Speaker Unit from a Pico RITE Hearing System 1 1 Hold the instrument firmly with one hand, and with the other hand hold the multi tool. Place the pointed end of the tool underneath the locking snap and push it up until the connector plug is free. 2 2 Gently pull the connector plug out of the socket. If it does not come out easily, verify that the snap is completely free. Do not attempt to detach the speaker unit by pulling on the wire. This could damage both the speaker unit and the hearing instrument. 10

PICO RITE 60- and 85-Speaker Units The 60- and 85-Speaker units are suitable for mild to moderately severe losses and come in four lengths. They can be used for instant and custom fittings. To obtain a more secure hold in the ear canal, an ear grip should be used. There are two different types of ear grips: one for the 60-Speaker and one for the 85-Speaker. Ensure that you apply the proper ear grip with the corresponding speaker. If the ear grip seems too long, it may be trimmed to the desired length. Be careful not to leave a sharp end when cutting since this could cause irritation on the skin. Attaching the Ear Grip to the 60-Speaker 1 Bring the tip of the speaker close to the ear grip opening 2 Push the speaker through the opening 3 The left/right marking on the speaker unit must be completely uncovered 1 2 3 Attaching the Ear Grip to the 85-Speaker 1 Bring the tip of the speaker close to the ear grip opening 2 Push the speaker through the opening as far as possible 1 2 11

Custom Molds for the 60- and 85-Speaker For custom fittings, two different types of molds can be attached to the 60- and 85-Speaker, the Micro Mold and the Lite Tip. Both come with an adapter already inserted, colored red (right) or blue (left) to indicate which ear. The color dot on the top of the custom mold indicates the front and top position in the ear canal. Micro Mold 4 1 2 3 5 7 6 Lite Tip 4 1 2 3 8 6 7 1 Front-top indicator 2 Speaker adapter 3 ProWax filter 4 Pull-out string 5 60-Speaker 6 Left/Right indicator 7 ProWax minifit filter 8 85-Speaker A custom mold built for one type of speaker unit, cannot be attached to another one. Tools for Custom Molds There are two separate tools that can be used to attach and detach the 60- and 85-Speaker. A marking on the tool indicates for which speaker type it is intended. 12

PICO RITE Attaching the Lite Tip and the Micro Mold to the Speaker Unit 1 Use the tool which is appropriate for the speaker. Place the receiver into the cup pin of the tool and push the wire into the groove to obtain a stable attachment. The curve of the speaker and the tool should face the same direction. Make sure that the ProWax minifit is on the receiver (refer to page 16). 2 Before inserting the receiver into the mold, turn the receiver so that the wire and up marking on the mold are properly aligned. Carefully center the receiver in the middle of the adapter before pushing it in. Insert the receiver into the Custom Mold. Place the mold against the table and push the receiver firmly in place. Gently pull the wire to make sure that the speaker is inserted properly. Cover the sound outlet with a ProWax filter. 3 Make sure that the mold sits correctly in the patient s ear and check the position of the wire. If necessary, the wire is bendable by heating. 1 2 2 Detaching the Lite Tip and the Micro Mold from the Speaker 1 Remove the ProWax from the Custom Mold (refer to page 16) 2 Press the pointed end of the tool into the mold to release the speaker unit while firmly holding the mold 3 Push the tool into the mold. The mold will disengage with a click. 1 2 3 click 13

100-Speaker Unit for Power Fittings The 100-Speaker unit is intended for severe hearing losses. This speaker comes in two versions: one version is for instant fittings and one version is for custom fittings. 100-Speaker for Instant Fittings with Domes 1 100-Speaker unit 2 Sound outlet with ProWax minifit 1 2 Refer to page 6 to see which types of domes can be used to fit the 100-Speaker unit. 100-Speaker for Custom Fittings The 100-Speaker for custom fittings comes pre-attached in a custom Power Mold that fits the ear canal. The wire is attached separately to the mold in the appropriate length. To choose the appropriate speaker wire length, refer to page 8. The wire can be replaced via a connector system on the Power Mold faceplate. A specific tool should be used to attach and detach the wire from the Power Mold. 14

PICO RITE Attaching the Wire to the Power Mold 1 Plug the wire into the Power Mold connector 2 Slightly press with the thumb, to stabilize the connection 3 Put the cover on 4 Press with the thumb until it clicks 5 Connect the complete assembly to the hearing instrument 1 2 3 4 5 Click! Click! CAUTION 132 db SPL output Detaching the Wire from the Power Mold 1 Remove the cover by very gently sliding the special screwdriver-like blade of the tool between the wire and the faceplate and then apply a slight upwards pressure 2 Insert the other end of the tool into the notch which is on the connector, making sure that the tool is attached firmly 3 Gently rotate the tool in the direction of the arrow until the wire comes apart from the connector 1 2 3 15

Changing the Wax Filters Wax Protection The Pico RITE hearing instrument offers two types of wax filters, the ProWax and the ProWax minifit. For an overview on the use of these filters, refer to page 6. The wax filters should be changed as needed, to ensure efficient wax protection, and to prolong the life of the speaker unit. Visually inspect the filters. If they are clogged or there is no sound coming from the device, replace them. 1 Remove a tool from the turtle 2 Insert its empty end into the old filter and pull it out 3 Push a new filter into the sound outlet 4 Discard the used tool. It cannot be reused. ProWax ProWax minifit 1 2 1 2 3 4 3 4 16
