WHO ARE THE CLOWN DOCS? The Clown Docs at are five professionally trained clowns who use humor to distract patients from their hospital experience and to relieve stress among patients, family members and staff. This innovative therapy program, which has been part of Child Life Services since 1998, uses a pair of clowns to visit the hematology/oncology clinic, the neurology rehabilitation floor and all in-patient floors during three, 4-hour shifts each week. Each year, the Clown Docs make more than 8,000 visits to children in the hospital! This program also exposes medical students at Washington University School of Medicine to the benefits of humor as a communication tool through a class called The Medicine of Laughter. The Clown Docs program is funded entirely through generous donations to the hospital.

Highlights Mission Statement We do what s right for kids! Vision (SLCH) will be the hallmark for quality pediatric care within our region, as well as nationally and internationally. As the flagship for a growing, integrated pediatric health-care network, we will lead the development of innovative, cost-effective approaches in prevention, primary care and specialty services, with the ultimate goal of improving the health of all children. Our History Founded in 1879 by eight St. Louis women who recognized there were few doctors skilled to treat children and no hospital dedicated to their care children were being mistaken as miniature adults. At that time, children were treated free of charge and since then we have always treated all children regardless of their families ability to pay. Relationship with Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) Our entire faculty has two appointments one with the hospital and one as a faculty member at WUSM. WUSM was recently ranked the #3 medical school in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Recent Awards and Recognition Parents Magazine recognizes as one of the five best pediatric hospitals in the nation. U.S. News & World Report recognized SLCH as one of the nation s top children s hospitals in all of the seven specialties rated by the magazine. is the only hospital in the region and the state of Missouri to achieve this elite ranking. Magnet Status, the nation s highest honor for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), was granted to SLCH in January 2010. To date, only 170 of almost 5,000 hospitals nationwide three percent have Magnet status. The Facts Oldest pediatric hospital west of the Mississippi River and the seventh oldest in the United States 250 licensed beds, including a 26-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 75-bed neonatal intensive care unit and a five-bed pediatric bone marrow transplant unit. 275,000 patient visits each year. We offer comprehensive services in every pediatric medical and surgical specialty to children, from infancy to adolescence, and advocates on behalf of children and families. SLCH has served patients from all 50 states and 54 countries.
