New Methods to Test Prostate Cancer Aggressiveness Elizabeth A. Platz, ScD., M.P.H. Professor and Martin D. Abeloff, M.D. Scholar in Cancer Prevention Dr. Platz is a leader in the field of cancer epidemiology and is recognized for her leadership of multidisciplinary prostate cancer research teams. A major focus of her work is the use of molecular and genetic epidemiology approaches to understand the mechanisms underlying prostate incidence and progression. She conducts her work with an eye toward translation of findings into prevention and treatment strategies. She is at the forefront of epidemiologic research on the role of inflammation, a target for prevention, in the development of prostate cancer, and on telomere length as a prognostic marker for poor outcome after treatment for prostate cancer. Her work, which often sits at the interface between the population and basic sciences, is enhanced by the rich intellectual environment of multidisciplinary collaboration at Johns Hopkins.

Walsh Prostate Cancer Research Fund Each year, research proposals from our best and brightest scientists from departments including Oncology, Pathology, Medicine, Mechanical Engineering, Radiology, Urology, School of Public Health are submitted to a committee of faculty, scientists and Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Advisory Board members. The committee reviews the proposals and awards annual support. This funding provides the investigator with valuable preliminary data to use when applying for continued funding from agencies like the National Institutes of Health. Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Team The Johns Hopkins Prostate Cancer Team utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to treating prostate cancer. It involves close collaboration between the urologist, oncologist, and radiation oncologist to deliver the best science, the best treatment and the best outcome for the patient.
