Report 2013 of the Standing Committee : Geropsychology To be presented to the EFPA General Assembly in Stockholm on July 13-14, 2013 Please send the Report by April 30 to EFPA Head Office at headoffice@efpa.eu Luxembourg, May 2013 For the SC GeroPsychology Prof. Dr. Dieter Ferring Convenor Université du Luxembourg Email: dieter.ferring@uni.lu Prof. Dr. Frieder Lang Co-Convenor Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen- Nuremberg e-mail: psycho@geronto.uni-erlangen.de 1

Report 2013 Executive summary The report gives an overview of the committee s activities during 2012 and 2013. The year 2012 had a special importance to the Standing Committee (SC) because of its dedication as European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations. A number of SC projects were thus realized in 2012 that underlined the notion of active ageing out of a geropsychological perspective. Several of these activities render an input for activities and recommendations in 2013. Introduction Activities in 2012 1. Construction of a specific website for the SC Geropsychology; a. Offering information about events, trends and findings in training, counselling, and research in Geropsychology both at the European as well as the international level, b. Providing contact with experts and resources in selected fields of Geropsychology; c. Offering public resources in the national and the European associations. 2. Development and publication of a brochure on Active and Healthy Ageing provided in ten languages (see Annexe 1); 3. European Workshop on Healthy and Active Ageing, at the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg, 1-2 June 2012 (see Annexe 2); 4. Active participation at the EFPA expert conference Psychology for Health - Contributions to Policy Making September 20-21, 2012; 5. A special issue on "GeroPsychology across Europe" published in GeroPsych- The Journal of Gerontopsychology and Geriatric Psychiatry" in September 2013 (for contents see Annexe 3). 6. Becoming member of the AGE Platform Europe Responsible: Ferring/Lang Activities in 2013 1. Application within the Action Plans of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing In spring 2013 the SC applied for funding with the Action Plans of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP AHA) - Call 2. The SC proposed an initiative on Guidelines for Psychologists Practice and for Older Adults Promoting Active and Healthy Ageing. The development and dissemination of these guidelines is planned to serve the overall headline target of increasing the number of healthy years although the time horizon of 2020 may be too short to see its full impact. The primary focus of the application is on the general objective of improving the health status and quality of life of European citizens, with a particular focus on older people. The guidelines for carers also have the potential to supporting the long-term sustainability and efficiency of the health and social care system (for contents see Annexe 4). 2

The Invitation for Commitment closed on 28 February 2013. More than 300 commitments were submitted. The SC proposal focussed on the Specific Action for Frailty and Functional Decline. This commitment has been accepted and the SC Geropsychology is member of this Action Group. Next steps by the European Commission will concern now the practical details of how members can participate in the implementation of this Action Plan. There will be a meeting of the Action Group, in Brussels on 3rd and 4th July, and this meeting will represent the first opportunity to get to know the other members of the Action Group and to discuss the work to be done. Dieter Ferring will participate here. 2. European Congress of Psychology in Stockholm Symposium on Geropsychology in Europe This symposium will include the following contributions from SC members: Bustillos, A., Santacreu, M. and Fernández-Ballesteros, R.: Discrimination perception effects on active aging in three different cultures. A multiple-group analysis Despot Lucanin, J., Lucanin D.: Psychosocial Predictors of Survival and Health in Old Age Ferring, D. : Geropsychology: Developments and Challenges Lang, F. : Health and ageing Stepankova, H. : "Computerized training and mild cognitive impairment" The symposium will take place on Friday, 12 July between 8:30 and 10:00. Geropsychology for an Ageing Society: Implications for Policy Making Dieter Ferring will contribute within the symposium on Psychology and Policy Making and elaborate the speicifc topic of Geropsychology for an Ageing Society. 3. Providing resources for the public a. Expert data base on Geropsychology across Europe with respect to selected fields of expertise. Since there are similar activities planned by the EFPA directorate we did not proceed with this project but wait to be included in the EFPA activity. b. Guidelines, recommendations, and suggestions related to standards in geropsychological studies and master programmes. This represents an on-going task that will be discussed at the next real or virtual meeting of the group. c. Position paper about the importance of geropsychology in nursing and resident homes as well as general hospitals across Europe. This will also be discussed during the next group meeting. 3

Meetings 1) 3-4 July - Meeting concerning the Action Plans of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing (EIP AHA) - 2) 12 July 2013, planned meeting of the SC at the ECP European Congress of Psychology in Stockholm 3) To be determined Information & recommendations for GA & Member Associations The General Assembly is asked to take notice of the following: a. After two years of efficiently working together, it became evident that a big problem inhibiting collaboration within the SC concerns the limited resources of the national associations especially with respect to travel expenses. Even though members are highly motivated as indicated by the list of activities, it is difficult to meet on a regular schedule in Brussels due to missing options for financing meetings.
