Mission Statement Physical activities are critical to the development and maintenance of good health. The goal of physical education is to develop physically educated individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. Essential Learner Outcomes (ELOs) for Kindergarten This level encourages development of basic motor skills and active participation. Manipulate objects with accuracy and speed Develop specialized movement skills (e.g., juggling, jump rome, etc.) Demonstrate beginning strategies for game and activities Standard 2: Demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Use fundamental strategies in modified sports-related games Identify and apply the functions of bone and muscle to performance Describe the fitness components (Health: body composition, cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, and flexibility; Fitness: agility, coordination, power, reaction time, and speed) Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity. Participate in regularly physical activities for the purpose of improving skill and health. Identify the benefits derived from physical activity. Participate in moderate to vigorous physical activity. Standard 4: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness. Assess personal fitness based on valid, reliable fitness test (Presidential and National Fitness Test). Set goals to improve or maintain personal fitness. Identify and choose activities working to improve personal fitness level. Participate in moderate to vigorous activity in a variety of settings. Standard 2: Demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Identify principles of practice and conditioning that enhances performance. Identify personal or peer age appropriate information feedback for performance improvement. Identify basic offensive and defensive strategies in non complex settings. Introduce the basic concepts of cardiovascular fitness (e.g., explain target heart rate zone). Standard 3: Participates regularly in physical activity. Identify opportunities in the school and community for regular participation in physical activity. Participate daily in some form of health-enhancing physical activity. Investigate personal interests and capabilities in regard to one s exercise behavior. FOREVER FIT Physical Education Course Descriptions Grade 9-12 Forever Fit will provide structured classes designed to enhance student interest in lifelong physical activity. At NUHS, we understand the connection between physical fitness and academic success. We will strive to help students become and remain active throughout their lives through the following: Students will meet national and state standards and benchmarks for physical education. Students will create an activity and fitness plan, set individual goals, assess current levels of fitness and progress, manage time and responsibilities and overcome barriers to regular physical activity. Students will build confidence in their ability to lead active lifestyles and take control of their own health. Develop a plan to meet the minimum requirement for cardiovascular health: 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise seven days a week as recommended by the Surgeon General. Students will understand that regular exercise or activity helps prevent: heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and a host of other diseases. Regular exercise and physical activity will be stressed as the key components in maintaining a healthy body.students will choose from a variety of activities that will be selected based on student interest and facility availability. Program emphasis is placed on competing at a competitive level and developing not only physical fitness but also teamwork and sportsmanship. Physical Education Course Descriptions Grade 9-12 (continued) WEIGHT LIFTING AND CONDITIONING Weight Lifting & Conditioning is designed to meet the needs of the beginner as well as the experienced fitness enthusiast. This course will provide students with the opportunity to learn basic skills, techniques, and knowledge in exercises and the methods utilized in improving muscular strength, muscular endurance, aerobic and anaerobic conditioning (cardiovascular endurance), and flexibility of the human body. The course will combine various elements of strength training as well as plyometric, agility, and speed development. Each individual will have the opportunity to create their own unique training program or to follow established training programs. Students enrolled in this course during their competitive season will adjust their training schedule to accommodate competitive physical demands. Emphasis on these elements will provide students the knowledge needed to live a healthy life. GOALS FOR THE CLASS: To promote physical strength and vigor through development of strength, power, motor ability and endurance. Development of essential safety skills while in use of free weights. To develop knowledge of techniques and different areas of weight training and physical fitness programs. Development of proper kinetic and static warm-ups and exercises before and during weight lifting programs. Be able to demonstrate training techniques of aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercises, plyometrics, and speed and agility training. PERSONAL FITNESS Personal Fitness is a course designed to meet the individual needs of both women and men. The emphasis of this fitness course will be on the development of the mind and the body as a unit through a variety of aerobic activities as well as strength training and flexibility exercises. This is a noncompetitive class designed for students who are internally motivated and have a desire to develop a fitness program that meets his/her individual needs. Activities for Personal Fitness: Total body conditioning, strength training, kickboxing, yoga, pilates, aerobics (step, hi-lo impact,) strength training, ZUMBA, fitness testing (pre, mid and post) power walking, exercise balls, and circuit training. Students will work with the teacher to come up with ideas/activities to adapt for students in DAPE. APPRENTICE: Students will build relationships while mentoring/tutoring K-3 students. Students will role model a positive attitude toward learning and school. Students will experience a community service based project atmosphere.
